This past year involved a lot of traveling, both privately and for business. One highlight was definitely the barcamp in Hamburg in March, but the BDÜ Conference in November which I wrote about here and here was just as amazing.

I also got to do quite a bit of interpreting with some very interesting new customers and locations (like the one where I got to model the latest fashion in interpreting) as well as more frequent summons to court.

Continued education also had its place this past year, from the great Anglophoner Tag in Würzburg in June to various webinars on a wide range of topics and of course the memoQ seminar I got to hold myself.

The volunteer work for the BDÜ LV Bayern was fun most of the time, not least because of the great team we have right now on the board, so the few bumps I encountered throughout the year (and that hopefully won't repeat like that in 2020) were manageable.

On the teaching side, we got a new set of translators and interpreters on their way, even though this year there was some excitement we could have gladly done without...
The new graduating class is a great, hard-working and fun bunch, and I have 11 students sitting in my interpreting classes, which makes me really happy!
The work with the commission for the new teaching curriculum of the Fachakademie for translation and interpreting also took some time in my schedule but is progressing nicely and still very interesting, if a little challenging at times.

Sitting here and thinking about all the great things that happened - even if it was hard at times, especially with all the traveling - I am really grateful for my job, the different hats I get to wear and the wonderful opportunities all that gives me.

So here's to a good start into a new year filled with more opportunities and both familiar and new things!Anke Betzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03599396421166642235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8937048938927902853.post-70324785301543350302019-12-23T13:51:00.000+01:002019-12-23T13:51:11.881+01:00Frohe Weihnachten

I think not! Over at the Savvy Newcomer, ATA's Blog for Newbies to Translation and Interpreting, a recent post talks about MT and how the savvy translator can use it - just at a time, when MT is on everyone's mind, especially if they attended the BDÜ conference in Bonn last month (which I wrote about here and here).

After giving a short overview of the historical development of MT, the article goes on to talk about when and how to use MT wisely - ther term the author, Lynne Bowker, uses is "MT Literacy". Being MT literate means that you understand how it works and when and how you should use it.

My favorite paragraph is this one:

It’s not perfect, and no reasonable person would claim that it is better
than the work of a professional translator. However, it would be
short-sighted of translators to dismiss this technology, which has
become more or less ubiquitous.

Anke Betzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03599396421166642235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8937048938927902853.post-43055016419267999082019-12-06T09:11:00.000+01:002019-12-06T09:11:06.170+01:00Oh, what to do first? That is probably the most pertinent question after the absolutely awesome BDÜ Conference 2019 in Bonn two weeks ago. The fact that I'm only now getting around to write about it shows you already how (positively) overwhelming that weekend was. I jokingly said to friends and colleagues that I needed about a month of vacation to digest and implement even half of the information I got, but really that was no joke.
Unfortunately, I don't have that time right now, as my regular life has kept moving along at the by now unfortunately familiar, somewhat crazy pace of the last months. True, christmas vacation is coming, but it still seems like a far way off...

But back to the conference. This was my third one organized by the BDÜ, and although the other two were good in their own right, this one was by far the best. I took copious notes like never before (digitally, via pictures and with good old-fashioned pen and paper) trying to get the most of all the sessions and workshops I had chosen (and boy was that choice a hard one to make!) and still somehow found time to meet up with old friends and new colleagues.

There were so many great speakers and topics, I really feel myself hard-pressed to pick out the best ones. There was just so much good, interesting, thought-provoking information, I really don't know where to start. I have quite a few things on my to do list, some of them to look into, some to implement, so I might have to actually take my laptop on vacation with me... Not what I usually do, but then again, that would probably be really more fun than work.

Two highlights I want to mention, though, because it is highly unlikely that I will get another opportunity any time soon to do this:
I jumped in at short notice as room coordinator for one session with three parts, meaning I got to introduce the speakers, make sure they didn't run over their assigned time slots and field the questions. The part that made it so special? My room was the plenary hall, i.e. the chamber where the Bundestag used to meet and which has been kept as is, so you really feel like you're attending a parliamentary session. So standing at the front, facing all those seats with the Federal Eagle at my back, was really quite an experience.
The other highlight was my part on the interpreters' team for said plenary hall, and I got to interpret the award ceremony of the Hieronymus and Dr.-Stanisalw-Gierlicki Awards on Saturday evening together with a colleague. I was so excited to get to sit in the booth where countless interpreters used to work for the Bundestag. The view really was something else, and the feeling, indescribable.

So, yeah, I'm still not sure what to do first and when to do it, but the information overload is starting to sort itself into managable pieces which I will tackle one at a time. The first task is already done now - writing a blog post! ;-)

With the recent influx of interpreting jobs, another indispensable tool that came to my mind are glossaries.

Without them, I don't think it would be possible to work effectively as a translator but even more so as an interpreter. If all I had were dictionaries and term bases or glossaries of other people, I might be able to get by translating, where I have more time to research words, phrases and contexts, but that is definitely not my idea of perfect working conditions. But interpreting? Hardly.

While preparing for the very different interpreting assignments these last few weeks, I updated two glossaries and created one completely new one. And it was an absolute lifesaver that I did, too!

Creating or updating a glossary really serves two purposes:

I put together a list of terms and their translations in a certain context and/or for a certain situation. This means, when the time for interpreting comes, I have everything I need for that specific topic and event right at my fingertips and in one place, without having to search through numerous dictionaries, online sources etc.

By collecting and researching these terms, I am already learning them and about the topic or topics that will or might come up during the assignment, meaning there should be no unexpected surprises (unless of course the client changes things, but that's a different story and thankfully doesn't happen all that often), which gives me peace of mind, resulting in an even better performance on my part.

This two-fold preparation proved invaluable particularly for that short-notice assignment two weeks ago, as one of the speakers had a 80-slide presentation that he rushed through within 90 minutes, speaking at not one mile but rather three miles a minute! Had I not carefully gone through his presentation and picked out the difficult and unfamiliar terms beforehand, I would have been completely lost and probably unable to follow him, much less interpret his lecture.

But glossaries are not only necessary tools for interpreters; translators also really need them. Ben Karl over at Ben Translates wrote a very good post about why you absolutely should have your own glossaries. Take a look and read it here.

So whether you're a translator or an interpreter (or both), glossaries should be part of your set of tools, and if you have not started yet - get with it!

US, UK, AU, internationales Englisch)

Formate von Datum, Maßeinheiten, Uhrzeiten

Schreibweise und Schriftbild von Firmenname(n), Produktname(n), Claims

Festgelegte Schrifttypen und Unternehmensfarben

Bestimmte Grammatikvorgaben (z.B. kontrahierte Verbformen ja oder nein,
Oxford Comma, Gebrauch des Verbmodus Subjunctive, Einsatz bestimmter
Stilrichtlinien [APA, Chicago Manual of Style, …], Großschreibung in
Überschriften, Groß- und Kleinschreibung in bulletierten Listen)

Terminologievorgaben, Termbanken, Glossare, Formatvorlagen

;-)Anke Betzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03599396421166642235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8937048938927902853.post-60271045676909411222019-10-24T15:53:00.000+02:002019-10-28T15:54:02.911+01:00Preparing for an interpretation assignmentI'm having to interpret at very short notice the next two days, so preparing properly is a bit of a challenge, seeing as I was called only yesterday to fill in for a colleague who has become ill.

Thankfully, the topic is not entirely unknown to me and the customer has sent plenty of material, an agenda and more helpful information, such as names of those who will be listening to us. Plus, my cabin partner has been working for this customer for a while, which gives me peace of mind - at least one of us is very well prepared.

The International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) has compiled a list of helpful materials a customer should provide interpreters with before the assignment:

The agenda may not seem like much but it’s
chock-full of information. It shows how the meeting is organized –
schedule, speeches/presentations, discussion and breakout sessions, etc.
Add on speakers' résumés and the list a participants (individuals and organizations) and it’s even better.

Reports or talks from previous meetings are great.
Sure, this year’s conference will be different, but we’re talking about
background. Minutes, position papers, even general information about
your organization will illustrate what you are all about. Your
interpreters will gain insight into areas under discussion, pick up
procedural information and learn how your cohort talks.

Any background material made available to
participants, especially information on the purpose of the meeting,
should be made available to your language people also. It will help them
put things in context and construct mind maps that will inform their
work.

Your website and those of any partner groups will
be extremely useful – and perhaps should have been mentioned first.
After all, the website might well be the place all the information
mentioned above is available. Paperless is possible – and interpreters
have long gone electronic.

Direct person-to-person contact is sometime
forgotten in our high-tech world but shouldn’t be. Maximize
communication by minimizing the distance between your organization and
the interpreters. Having a single contact person on each side is
advisable.

A pre-meeting briefing/Q&A session can be beneficial for both sides, especially if the topic is highly specialized.

And if speeches or power points do come in before
(or even during) the meeting, by all means make them available. Your
interpreters will be able to prepare them in context having studied
everything you provided previously.

Unfortunately, not all customers do this, or even some of this, even when you (repeatedly) ask them for material, turning preparation into a sort of guessing game, but I'm really glad that I have been provided with all of the above for tomorrow and Saturday!

There are quite a few helpful websites on how to prepare for an assignment, both for customers and for interpreters:

http://interpreters.free.fr/preparation.htm

https://www.bilingual-ls.com/single-post/2017/05/26/10-Tips-Preparing-for-Conference-Interpreting-Services

Have fun browsing - and preparing, hopefully with more time!
Anweisungen weitergeben.

Well, if you've ever heard that "anyone who knows more than one language can be a translator and/or interpreter", here's an excellent video by Michelle Hof available over at A Word in Your Ear busting this myth (and also a few others) on interpretation. Enjoy!

Anke Betzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03599396421166642235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8937048938927902853.post-21070533343093026062019-09-28T08:59:00.002+02:002019-09-28T08:59:31.758+02:00Great source of EU-related TMs and TBsDid you know there are free translation memories and termbases available on all kinds of topics related to the EU? You can find them on the ELRC SHARE repository. It is a project by the European Language Resource Coordination, mainly for use by the European Commission, but the resources are free to anyone.

There are multilingual texts of all kinds of publications, provided in several formats, among them .tmx, so you can import them directly into the tool of your choice. Glossaries are also available in .tbx format for easy import.

Please note: It has to say "processed" next to the title for both TMs and TBs if you want the ready-to-import files!

You can filter for instance by languages (also several languages at once), formats, domains (i.e. topics), and of course you can search by typing keywords into the search bar on top.

Yes, the language combinations are a bit unusual, and not everything is available in all languages or language combinations and formats for all topics, but still - it's an official source and it's free, and who knows when you might need exactly this information?

So have a look around and hopefully, it'll be of use to you!

We made it through with emergency schedules, like every year, but also like every year, circumstances beyond the control of our department head kept throwing monkey wrenches into her almost-done schedule and we have to wait.

Nevertheless, classes did take place, and I started right into the various syllabi, especially in the classes in FAK3 who are in their final year and have less time due to the written exams taking place the beginning of May. They are also a rather large class (17 students), so getting all the required grades will be somewhat of a challenge, meaning I have to get started pretty much right away.

But despite all this adversity, I am looking forward to teaching, especially my favorite subjects, interpretation and CAT tools.
I am also trying to continuously improve particularly those two subjects, making them more fun and more up-to-date regarding the "real world" in order to prepare my students the best I can for life after school. I am also going to try to get some of the other teachers more involved, connecting different subjects like translation and CAT tools (which will require some instruction on my part), and I am confident it'll work at least in some cases and give the students more opportunities to actually apply what they are being taught.

So hopefully, we'll have a schedule by Monday and are able to really get started, but more importantly, I hope for a good school year ahead, both for us teachers and for the students!

Even though this vacation consisted more of work then play (there was some biking, of course!), it was relaxing nevertheless – doing physical labor is a nice change from working with your brain all the time. And since the work was in the garden, I even managed to get a bit of a tan. 😁

I hope, everyone else was able to get some time off, as well, and enjoy the summer. I know I did! And I’m actually looking forward to getting back into the flow of the job I love.

Have a good start back, everyone, and hopefully I’ll see some of you, working or playing or both.

Anke Betzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03599396421166642235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8937048938927902853.post-83961202916059719682019-08-17T09:38:00.002+02:002019-08-17T09:38:26.070+02:00Zitat der Woche - Sommerausgabe

United Kingdom and in some other places, the silly season is the period lasting
for a few summer months typified by the emergence of frivolous news stories in

first attested in 1861, was listed in the second (1894) edition of Brewer's
Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, and remains in use at the start of the 21st
century. The fifteenth edition of Brewer's expands on the second, defining the

Really, I should have been the one to give them something, since they really were a great class, making my life as a first-time head teacher a lot easier than it could have been! Instead, they gifted me with this:

And they obviously also put a lot of thought into it - I love dictionaries, and I don't speak Bavarian (and all attempts are pitiful, for some reason, even though I was born and raised here and don't have any problems with other languages, but that's a different story).

So, to my lovely students: Thank you so very much!! You've been wonderful and I look forward to teaching you again next year (even if it's not as head teacher, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, now is it?)!

Anke Betzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03599396421166642235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8937048938927902853.post-43941411808164801862019-07-12T14:29:00.000+02:002019-07-12T14:30:21.600+02:00Does MT influence language?Language is in constant flux as is; the influence of globalization on English, for example, is undeniable. I constantly come across words and phrases that only ten years ago would have been considered incorrect, but can now be found even in such esteemed publications as the Financial Times (one of my non-favorites: so-called). And the reason is the increasing number of non-native speakers and writers around the world expressing themselves in English, always influenced by their own native languages.
The same applies to other languages, too, of course (may I just mention the infamous Denglish word "Handy"?).

Machine translation reflects this, as well, because the data it uses also stems from all over the world. But that is not the only way in which MT might influence language.

"Post-editese", i.e. the language or perhaps dialect machines "speak", is real, as Antonino Toral from the University of Groningenin the Netherlands found out. In his paper "Post-editese: an Exacerbated Translationese" published July 1 of this year, he found that there is a definite difference between the target language a human translator produces and that coming out of a machine. Toral says:

Compared to unaided human translations, we show evidence that
post-edited translations are simpler, more normalised and have more
interference from the source language. Could post-editing then have a
negative influence on the target language? If so, should we care about
that?

I think the question is quite relevant and one worth thinking about, and not only with regard to what a translation is supposed to "sound" like (target audience, purpose etc.), but also looking at what this means for the future of a language, particularly one into which a lot of translations are done.

The question whether something is correct only because a lot of people say or write it gets a whole new meaning in this context, as well. Because if "people" soon also includes machines, does that mean language will become more "mechanical"? And is that something we should just accept?Anke Betzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03599396421166642235noreply@blogger.com0
