Als Freiberufler ist man ohne Mobiltelefon eigentlich aufgeschmissen. Ich wäre es auf jeden Fall, was aber v.a. damit zu tun hat, dass mein "Handlich" mehr ist als nur ein Telefon, nämlich auch Terminkalender, Adressbuch und Notizblock. Außerdem erinnert es mich an wichtige Dinge, und - sehr wichtig - ich kann damit E-Mails empfangen und versenden.

Nichtsdestotrotz ist es natürlich auch ein Telefon, und ich verwende es auch als solches, und zwar sowohl privat als auch beruflich. Und für v.a. letzteres ist es in meinen Augen wichtig, dass ein paar Punkte beachtet werden.

Wenn mich ein Kunde anruft, nehme ich nur ab, wenn ich alleine bin und wenn es ruhig ist. Sollte das nicht der Fall sein, gehe ich entweder an einen Ort, an dem es so ist, oder ich nehme nicht ab. Ich finde es gibt nichts Schrecklicheres als in einem Raum voller sich unterhaltenden Menschen oder auf einem Bahnsteig, wenn gerade ein Zug durch fährt, zum einen zu versuchen zu verstehen, was am anderen Ende gesagt wird, und zum anderen selbst sehr laut reden zu müssen, damit der andere mich hören kann. Wer jemals telefoniert hat während am anderen Ende der Leitung ein Zug gebremst hat, weiß wie unsagbar laut das ist - das Telefon kann ja Geräusche nicht so schön filtern wie unser Ohr und schickt deshalb einfach alles durch den Äther.

Ganz zu schweigen davon, dass es sich ja potentiell um vertrauliche Informationen handelt, die damit laut hinausposaunt würden. Ich finde es immer wieder unglaublich, wie viele Gespräche ich schon (unfreiwillig) in Zugabteilen und Cafés überhört habe, bei denen ich mich gefragt habe, ob die Person am anderen Ende des Gesprächs wusste, dass gerade mindestens 10 weitere Personen alles Mögliche über sie und/oder die Firma erfahren. Auch wenn es nur das halbe Gespräch ist.

Wenn es ein wichtiger Kunde ist, gehe ich vielleicht auch dann dran, wenn ich nicht alleine bin, aber dann sage ich gleich, dass ich an einem öffentlichen Ort bin, so dass er entscheiden kann ob er trotzdem mit mir reden möchte.

Wenn ich einen Kunden von unterwegs anrufen muss, gelten die oben genannten Punkte, was die Umgebungslautstärke und Privatsphäre betrifft, natürlich ebenso. Zusätzlich ist es dann aber auch wichtig an die Bürozeiten (und evtl. die Zeitzone) des Kunden zu denken. Aber da gibt es ja im Notfall auch noch die Möglichkeit eine SMS oder eine E-Mail zu schicken.

Für alle Anrufe, egal ob geschäftlich oder privat, gilt für mich außerdem:

- Telefonieren, wenn der Empfang schlecht ist oder werden könnte ist keine gute Idee. Je wichtiger das Gespräch, desto schlechter, wenn es mittendrin weg ist. Das gilt v.a. in Zügen und U-Bahnen, in der Nähe von Starkstromleitungen und auf dem Land (ja, auch in Deutschland gibt es Funklöcher!).

- Telefonieren beim Autofahren, auch mit Freisprechanlage oder Headset, geht nur im Notfall, wenn ich z.B. im Stau stehe und es absehbar ist, dass ich zu spät zu einem Termin kommen werde. Ansonsten: bei der nächsten Gelegenheit anhalten und dann telefonieren. Zum einen kann es ja sein, dass ich auch noch etwas aufschreiben oder nachschauen muss, zum anderen ist es nun mal einfach so, dass man (und aller Klischees zum Trotz auch frau nicht) sich nicht auf zwei Dinge gleichzeitig konzentrieren kann. D.h. entweder meine Aufmerksamkeit für den Verkehr oder das potentiell wichtige Gespräch leidet, und das kann beides sehr schnell ein ungutes Ende nehmen.

- Telefonieren als wäre man alleine, wenn man es nicht ist (und hier meine ich v.a. die Lautstärke), kann nicht nur peinlich sein, sondern nervt garantiert auch mindestens die Hälfte, wenn nicht alle, der unfreiwilligen Zuhörer. Besonders wenn das Thema die letzte DSDS-Sendung oder der Beziehungsstress ist. Nicht nur Kunden haben ein Recht auf Privatsphäre. Deshalb sollte auch für Privatgespräche Vertraulichkeit ein Thema sein.

My first all-day seminar

Last Saturday, I held my very first all-day seminar as part of the continued education program of the BDÜ. Interestingly, I was not nervous at all, but rather really worried about the technological aspect, since I was giving an introduction to the CAT-Tool memoQ by Kilgray, and the location did have it installed on all PCs but not worked with it before. To put it briefly, yes, there were technical problems, which not even the IT specialist present was able to solve, but I found a workaround so we could continue with the seminar (we basically ignored the error, moved it out of sight and kept working).

The 11 participants were full of questions, some of which I was not able to answer, or at least not to the desired degree, mainly because they were support questions regarding problems with their installation of the program and I am not that computer-savy.

Overall, though, I felt that I was able to explain the main features and functions well and pass on some of the tips and tricks I have acquired during my use of memoQ, and judging by the feedback I received, so did the participants. (One of the nicest things I heard was "I have attended three seminars on memoQ so far, and this was by far the best one"! What more could I ask for? (: )

Obviously I am totally thrilled about the positive reactions and the praise (and I hope you don't mind my reveling in it for a bit), since it was the first time I stood in front of people for longer than 2 hours. Considering my background in the performing arts, it's no surprise that I had no problem with actually being in the spotlight, and I was glad that the routine kicked in and not the nerves. However, it is quite a different game when technology is involved and when the questions keep coming.

I could have stopped the questions and saved them for the end, but had decided beforehand that I would take them immediately, since in my mind it makes more sense to answer them while you're talking about a certain point, anyway. It might not be so obvious or easy later. Of course, if I knew the question would be answered later on in the seminar, anyway, I said so.

I was glad I had prepared a plan of action, i.e. a list of the things I wanted to address and above all the order in which I wanted to do so. Otherwise, the very first question would have thrown me completely off track. Having interpreted all last year for a train the trainer course did help with that, too, since I was able to use quite a few things from that course, the list just being one of them.

Nevertheless, reviewing the day later on, I found a number of things I would have liked to talked about or shown, or spent more time on, or explained in more detail, or just done differently. But (hopefully) I'll learn from my experiences, and since I took quite a few notes, both during the seminar (e.g. good questions, changes in the order etc.) and during the review, and even now while working with memoQ, I'm sure the next time will be even better, and the time after that better again, and so forth.

Now all I need is another opportunity... So, anyone interested in an introduction to memoQ any time soon?

Nachdem mein Arbeitsrechner jetzt endlich wieder läuft, kann ich also meinen ersten Blog-Beitrag des Jahres schreiben (auch wenn es technisch gesehen der zweite ist...).

Zuerst einmal ein Blick zurück auf 2011:

Zu meiner großen Freude durfte ich 2011 deutlich mehr dolmetschen, u.a. auch in der Kabine, und ich habe einen Direktkunden bekommen, für den ich regelmäßig dolmetschen darf. Natürlich war immer noch die ein oder andere Hochzeit dabei, aber nicht mehr so oft wie das Jahr zuvor.

Meine Lieblingskunden sind immer noch meine Lieblingskunden (Gruß in die Schweiz), und mein Name wird immer bekannter - zumindest habe die Empfehlungen merklich zugenommen, was mich natürlich sehr freut.

Insgesamt habe ich etwas mehr Umsatz gemacht als 2010, aber dafür war es zeitweise auch ganz schön stressig, was aber nicht nur an der Arbeit lag. Dafür habe ich mich aber auch im Nein-Sagen verbessert, und das will etwas heißen!!

Außerdem habe ich mein Tätigkeitsfeld erweitert, und zwar habe ich zum einen meine Spezialisierung um die (klassische) Musik erweitert, was ja auch wirklich Zeit wurde, und zum anderen begonnen, offiziell als Referentin für den BDÜ zu arbeiten, was mir unheimlich Spaß macht.

Und was bringt 2012?

Tja, wenn man das als Freiberufler nur immer wüsste... Ich wünsche mir auf jeden Fall, dass es weiterhin so interessant bleibt, dass ich wieder ein paar neue Kunden finde (oder sie mich), dass ich wieder Gelegenheiten zum Dolmetschen in der Kabine habe, dass ich als Referentin anderen wirklich helfen kann, und dass ich besser darin werde auf mich zu achten und mich nicht zu überfordern! Dazu gehört zum einen das Nein-Sagen, aber zum anderen auch gutes Verhandeln, z.B. bezüglich Abgabeterminen. Aber da man ja nie auslernt, bin ich eigentlich zuversichtlich, dass mir das gelingen wird.

Natürlich wünsche ich mir, dass 2012 ein gutes Jahr wird, was aber nicht unbedingt etwas mit Umsatz und Gewinn zu tun hat, sondern eher damit, etwas zu tun, was einem Spaß macht, und zufrieden zu sein, und zwar im beruflichen und im privaten Leben. Und das wünsche ich auch meinen Lesern!

Computer Trouble

Well, I wanted to use the first post of the year to review 2011 and write about what my plans are for 2012, but my pc decided to break down right after Christmas, and after I finally got it back from the repairman, with a new hard drive, it took me hours just to install the antivirus program, and then it refused to accept anything else, so I had to take it back in. Today's a holiday here, but he said he might be able to look at it anyway, at the latest tomorrow, so hopefully he'll find out what the problem is and solve it , so I can have my pc back, set it up and work with it again?! And then I'll write that first post of the year...

I mean, I'm glad I have a notebook I can work with, otherwise I'd be in real trouble (that will be another "Essential Office Equipment" post soon), but it's just not the same.

So, I hope your year started out better than mine and continues to just get better!

Essential Office Equipment: Copy Holder

As a sworn-in translator, I get to translate quite a lot of documents that are only available in paper format, such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, certificates etc. I am not particularly fond of these kind of projects, mainly because the translation has to look like the original, which means I have to do a lot of formatting. For most of these documents, OCR is not an option, either, so I basically end up typing everything into a word processing program, which means that I have to constantly switch between looking at the original document and the computer screen.

When I first started out, I used one of those foldable plastic desktop music stands usually used by children playing the recorder (at least here in Germany). It was better than having the document lie flat on the desktop, but still not perfect, since the only place I could set it up on my desk still required me to turn my head back and forth and up and down, plus I tended to get hunched over the longer I worked.

However, I finally found a solution that brought the head movement to a minimum, improved my posture, doesn't use up precious space on my desk and didn't cost an arm and a leg:

The Kensington(R) FlexClip(TM) gooseneck copyholder

The copy holder simply clips onto a flat PC or notebook monitor, or you can use the included plastic base that gets glued to the top of the monitor to attach the holder. Just clamp the document into the other end, adjust the "gooseneck" to the height and angle you need, and voilá - you have a good view of the document and good posture at the same time. You can use it on the left or the right, and it is so small that you can easily take it with you in your notebook bag when working on the go.

I don't know how many papers it can hold at a time - the maximum number I had so far was 10 sheets- , but for my purposes it is perfect.

Now if I could only find a similarly simple solution to the formatting problem...

Referententätigkeit

Ich bin mal wieder dabei ein neues Tätigkeitsfeld für mich zu entdecken, und zwar das einer Referentin.

Angefangen hat es Anfang letzten Jahres, als ich mich spontan von einer BDÜ-Kollegin dazu verpflichten ließ einen Workshop zum Thema RSS-Feeds zu halten. Einige Monate später dann habe ich einen Workshop über den Umgang mit der BDÜ-internen Internetplattform "MeinBDÜ" gehalten, hauptsächlich weil wir die interne Kommunikation in unserer Regionalgruppe über dieses Medium laufen lassen wollen.
Diesen Workshop, der jetzt auch ganz offiziell von den Regionalgruppen durch den LV Bayern gebucht werden kann, habe ich inzwischen schon ein zweites Mal gehalten, und zwar in Bamberg, und es kam auch schon eine Anfrage aus Landshut dafür. Außerdem hat mich Ralf Lemster, der Vizepräsident im Bundesvorstand ist, angesprochen, ob ich diesen Workshop auch als Webinar halten würde - wozu ich begeistert ja gesagt habe!
Ende Januar werde ich dann in Erlangen mein erstes ganztägiges Seminar halten, und zwar "Einführung in memoQ - Grundlagenseminar".
Außerdem haben mich inzwischen schon zwei weitere Kolleginnen als Referentin für ihre Firmen an Land gezogen, um bei interessierten Unternehmen verschiedene Vorträge zum Thema Dokumentation und Übersetzungen zu halten bzw. Seminare und Schulungen zu verschiedenen Tools und Themen für Übersetzer zu halten.

Ich bin sehr begeistert über diese neuen Aufgaben und Herausforderungen, denn ich habe festgestellt, dass es mir unheimlich Spaß macht vor Leuten zu stehen und ihnen etwas Neues und Nützliches erklären zu können. Und ich bin schon gespannt, wie das nächste Jahr sich in dieser Hinsicht entwickeln wird.

Essential Office Equipment: External Hard Drives & Regular Backups

I had to completely redo my PC from scratch after a virus incapacitated it last week. If you've never had to do this - count your blessings! If you've been there before (blue screen of death, anyone?), you know what I'm talking about. It's not fun at all!

And it takes a long time to reinstall not only the "big", obvious software like mail and word processing programs and CAT tools, but also all those nifty little programs and tools you've collected over time that make work and life so much easier...

But wait - this only works if you've saved all your data somewhere else, away from the PC and any potential viruses, and preferably not 6 months ago.

As unhappy as I was about having to wipe the hard disk and reformat it and start from zero, if I hadn't been faithfully backing up my data, I might have considered changing profession and/or jumping off a tall building!

I cannot emphasize this enough: if your PC is the basis of your work life, you absolutely must have a back-up system in place and apply it, too!

Here is what I do:

- Daily back-ups of all work-related files

- Weekly back-ups of all important files

- Monthly complete back-ups

- Alternating between three (encrypted) external hard drives

I've been using Z-DBackup by Andreas Baumann, and it's been a life saver on several occasions already, but definitely this time around! It let's you set up several different back-up sets (e.g. I have one for work-related files, one for music and pictures etc.) and choose between creating one file or doing a 1:1 back-up. Also, you can select several different types of back-ups, such as complete or incremental back-up, which means that only those files that have changed from last time are being backed up, making things a lot quicker (this is what I use). Of course, regular complete back-ups are part of that set-up, as well.

There are too many great features to explain them all here, and really, it doesn't matter so much which program you use (I guess you don't even have to use a program at all), as long as you do back up your data regularly!

Alles neu.... macht der Virus?!

Tja, trotz bezahltem Antivirusprogramm hat mich bzw. meinen PC am Montag ein Virus erwischt. Nach mehreren Versuchen zu retten, was zu retten ist ohne alles platt machen zu müssen, ging es dann aber doch nicht mehr anders. Also hab ich meine Nerven gestählt, die Zähne zusammengebissen, mir gesagt, dass es eine gute Gelegenheit ist die Festplatte zu säubern (was ich sowieso schon länger mal machen wollte) und das Betriebssystem neu eingespielt.

Drei Tage und unzählige Neustarts, einige Urschreie und verzweifelte Telefonate mit meinem IT-kundigen Bruder später sehe ich endlich Licht am Ende des Tunnels. Die wichtigsten Programme sind installiert und laufen, mein Büro musste nicht schließen, und ich habe weder mir, noch meinen Mitmenschen, noch dem Computer Gewalt angetan.

Ich kann nur eines sagen: wie gut, dass ich immer fleißig Sicherungen gemacht habe, sonst wäre ich jetzt ziemlich aufgeschmissen...!

Historic dictionary

We finally got around to cleaning out the attic two weeks ago, and besides sorting through and throwing out a lot of stuff - or giving it to a charity -, I came across some cool, fascinating, funny, interesting and strange things.

One very interesting thing I found in a wooden trunk full of old books and LP records. I have no idea how it ended up in there, especially since no-one in my husband's family has or had any affinity for foreign languages, plus the name in the cover is not a relative. But however it found its way onto this attic in the wilderness of the Franconian Switzerland, I am very excited that it did!

Printed in 1946 by Sebaldus-Verlag Nürnberg, number of copies printed unknown, although there are some to be had via Amazon and antiquarian bookshops, and not very expensive at that.

The preface explains what it is and why it was published:

This book, “printed asmanuscript”, contains a collection (about 25,000 key words) of personal notesjotted down by an interpreter and translator in the course of his everydaypractice. It was not originally intended for publication, but, as it will be sometime before any of the well-known dictionaries can be re-issued, I decided togive way to the numerous requests for having this book printed as itstands.
Theexpressions given in this book cover principally administration, legal practice,food and agriculture, trade and industries, and the engineering, botanical,chemical, anatomical and pharmaceutical professions, as well as the names ofdrugs, etc. To some key-words, such as for instance, “Aräometer”, “Calorien”, “Hormone”,“Penicillin”, “Streptomycin”, “Vitamine”, explanations have been added, which farexceed the usual practice in dictionaries, giving this book more the characterof an encyclopedia. Furthermore, a number of charts and conversion tables forweights, measures, etc., have been included. So as not to disturb the cleararrangement and alphabetical order of the book, such explanations of key-wordsare separately boxed.
Somethingquite new is the collection of abbreviations coined during the Nazi-regime, suchas “Reichsschrifttumskammer”, “NS-Hago”, etc., which,as far as is known, have not been included before in any dictionary and whichare often difficult to translate into the Anglo-Americanlanguage.
I wish toexpress my appreciation to the American officers and officials, especially to Major Krotcher, Capt. Kinard, 1st Lt. Thacker and Tec.Sgt. I find it remarkable that this project was tackled already in the summer of 1945, just a few months after WWII had officially ended!

I have no idea how and in what context this might come in handy, but I will certainly treasure it, if only for historical reasons!

O Muttersprache, Mutterlaut

Am Wochenende kamen wir endlich mal dazu den Dachboden auszuräumen und zu -misten. Unglaublich, was sich dort alles versteckt hatte?! Vieles haben wie aussortiert, aber ein paar Sachen, die sich in den verstaubten Kisten und Boxen fanden, waren doch mehr als interessant, u.a. diese Schallplatte:

Lieder, Tänze und Mundart aus der Noris erschienen im Dürerjahr 1971

Ein Mundartgedicht hat es mir besonders angetan, und das wollte ich euch nicht vorenthalten, nämlich:

"O Muttersprache, Mutterlaut" von Hans Mehl, gesprochen vom Dichter selbst

Ein herrliches Beispiel des Nürnberger Dialekts, und erstaunlich relevant, finde ich zumindest.

Now I lay me down to sleep...

When I tell people I work from home, they tend to think that I sleep late, walk around in my PJs and lay on the couch with my notebook, taking frequent naps. Well. Maybe that's what other freelancers do. I don't.

I get up early (usually between 6 am and 6:30 am) and get dressed (who knows when potential customers may find their way to my door?), and I have an actual desk with a real PC, where I spent most of my working hours when I am not interpreting. I do have a notebook, but I only use it when I'm on the road. And there also is a couch in the living room, but I have never worked on it, other than maybe reading some professional magazines or other business-related books etc.

So, how about them naps, then? After all, being self-employed and working from home should have some advantages, shouldn't it? Believe me, it does, and I would not trade it for an in-house position, regardless of how much you pay me! And, yes, one of these advantages is the fact that I can schedule my working hours fairly flexibly most of the time, including breaks and, well, naps.

I don't do this regularly at all (unless I don't feel well, of course), but every now and then, maybe because I worked late the night before, or because I slept poorly because the one dog woke me up three times to be taken out and the other one joined in for company, or because it's just one of those days where the sun doesn't seem to want to break through the cloud cover, and work is slow anyway and a walk in the fresh air is not feasible for whatever reason - every now and then I actually do lay down on the couch in the middle of the day and take a nap. Not a long one, 45 minutes tops, and I do set an alarm. But that's usually enough to get me through that low point, past that slump in productivity, and then I am ready to roll again with a clear(er) mind.

The funny thing is that I usually don't even really sleep during that time. But something about just laying there, letting my thoughts drift (preferably not on anything work-related) and listening to my dogs snore gently on their pillow next to me is so relaxing that my batteries get recharged anyway.

How about you? Do you take "power naps" during the day? If so, how long and how frequently? If not, why not?

I am fairly tall for a woman. Not super-tall (the WNBA wouldn't be very impressed), but tall enough to make buying a pair of pants somewhat of a nightmare undertaking for me... but that's a different story, and one I won't divulge here.
So, although I am pretty tall, most of that height comes from my legs. When I sit down, I appear actually rather short. Not a huge problem, really, but when it comes to sitting in front of a computer all day, it has the potential to become one. Mainly for my back. And the circulation in my legs (varicose veins, anyone?). And all that fun stuff that comes from sitting incorrectly in a chair for prolonged periods of time.
Having a good office chair is somewhat of a no-brainer, but if I want to sit at a height that accommodates my arms, wrists and hands (and consequently my head, neck and shoulders), my feet are too high off the ground. Yes, I could probably contrive something to have the keyboard and mouse lower than desktop-level, but I decided on a different solution: I bought me a footrest.

It can be completely adjusted to my needs, and the best part: it's heatable?! So on top of being in the right position (when I don't tuck them under myself), my feet will always be nice and warm, which will make the rest of me warm, too, even when the heater gives out!
So, bring it on, winter!

Richtiges Denglisch

Als ich 2004 nach 10 Jahren USA wieder nach Deutschland kam, war ich überrascht (und ziemlich entsetzt) wie viele englische und vermeintlich englische Wörter sich in den deutschen Alltagswortschatz eingeschlichen hatten. V.a. bei Dingen, für die es wunderbare deutsche Wörter gab, hat mich das ziemlich aufgeregt - und tut es immer noch.

Auf einmal gab es keine Handzettel mehr sondern nur noch Flyer, statt Versammlungen oder Treffen gingen alle zu Meetings, und Fortbildungen waren zu Trainings mutiert (der Plural tut mir jedes mal aufs Neue weh).

Das Paradebeispiel für Denglisch ist in meinen Augen aber immer noch das gute alte Handy. In letzter Zeit bin ich mir allerdings nicht mehr so sicher, ob diese Bezeichnung nicht vielleicht doch sehr viel treffender ist als gedacht.

Wer auch immer die Idee hatte das - mit seinen fünf Silben zugegebenermaßen doch recht lange - Mobiltelefon als "Handlich" zu bezeichnen muss zumindest latente wahrsagerische Fähigkeiten gehabt haben, denn was ist ein Mobiltelefon (neudeutsch "Smartphone") heutzutage, wenn nicht handlich? Es hat alles dabei, was man so braucht - Kontaktliste, Terminkalender, E-Mail, Internetzugang, Social Media, Chat, Musik, eBücher etc. - und noch so einiges mehr, was man vielleicht nicht so dringend braucht, das Leben aber netter macht. Und das alles in einem, genau, sehr handlichen Format!

Ach ja, telefonieren kann man damit auch noch, aber falls das mal nicht mehr wichtig sein sollte, passt der Name ja trotzdem immer noch, und dann sogar auch auf Englisch...

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fang, grocers don't grocer and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese.. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people not computers and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why when the stars are out they are visible but when the lights are out they are invisible.

PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'quick' ?

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP'

It's easy to understand UP , meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report ?

We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work Upon appetite, and think UP excuses.. To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special..

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP . We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP ! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time , but if you don't give UP ,you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP .. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP ...

When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP.

When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP .

One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP , for now my time is UP , so........it is time to shut UP !

15 Tipps zum Thema E-Mail-Etikette in der geschäftlichen Korrespondenz

Falls ich etwas vergessen haben sollte, bitte gerne in den Kommentaren ergänzen!

Ein Betreff muss sein - immer. Ich hasse nichts mehr als E-Mails ohne Betreff zu bekommen. Wenn ich den Absender nicht kenne, ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit groß, dass sie ungelesen im Spam-Ordner landet.
Es gibt einen Unterschied zwischen An, CC und BCC. Und den sollte man auch kennen. Und am besten CC und BCC sparsam verwenden und nur wenn es unbedingt sein muss.
Antwort an alle nur dann verwenden, wenn man auch wirklich allen antworten möchte, die in der Empfängerliste stehen. Andersherum gilt aber auch: nicht vergessen allen zu antworten, wenn es alle betrifft.
Höflich währt am längsten. E-Mails werden schnell missverstanden, deswegen ist der richtige Ton wichtig. Sarkasmus kommt schon „mündlich“ nicht immer an, schriftlich kann er zu leicht verletzen. Je sachlicher, desto besser.
Kurz und knackig. Das Wichtige in kurzen, leicht verständlichen Sätzen vermitteln - niemand möchte seitenlange Romane lesen, in denen letztendlich nur wenige Fakten stehen, die auch noch gut versteckt sind.
Rechtzeitig antworten. Auch wenn es nur ein kurzes “Danke für Ihre Anfrage, leider bin ich ausgebucht bis xyz” oder „Danke für die Info“ ist.
Kritik an anderen - auf keinen Fall (auch keine Beschwerden über Dritte). Kritik sollte immer persönlich oder per Telefon geübt werden, so dass Missverständnisse direkt aus der Welt geräumt werden können. Außerdem weiß man nie, was mit der E-Mail passiert, wenn sie erst einmal verschickt wurde - am Ende landet sie noch im Posteingangsordner der Person, über die man sich beschwert hat?!
E-Mails nicht wütend beantworten. Man kann die E-Mail zwar schreiben, aber dann sollte man sich erstmal ein oder zwei Stunden (oder vielleicht sogar Tage) Zeit nehmen zum Abregen. Am besten den eigenen Gefühlen Luft machen, indem man die E-Mail schreibt und dann statt auf Senden auf Löschen klickt.
Keine Kettenbriefe weiterleiten. Zum größten Teil handelt es sich dabei nur um moderne Legenden. Am besten einfach gar nicht weiterleiten, aber wenn man sich nicht sicher ist, kann man auf Seiten wie Snopes.com nachschauen, ob die Sache echt ist oder eben nicht.
Nicht alles in GROSSBUCHSTABEN schreiben. In der digitalen Kommunikation ist das gleichzusetzen mit Schreien - und niemand mag es angeschrien zu werden. Genauso ärgerlich ist es aber auch, wenn jemand überhaupt keine Großschreibung verwendet, denn das ist sehr anstrengend zu lesen und stimmt mich dem Absender gegenüber schon mal nicht sehr wohlgesonnen.
Die Signatur sollte den vollständigen Namen und Kontaktinformation enthalten, aber nicht länger als 4-5 Zeilen sein. Initialen oder Pseudonyme sind wenig hilfreich und erwecken eher einen unseriösen Eindruck.
Keine E-Mails mit beleidigendem, verleumderischem, anstößigem, rassistischem oder obszönem Inhalt verschicken oder weiterleiten. Eigentlich selbstverständlich, passiert aber trotzdem immer wieder.
E-Mails sind nicht privat. Sie sind wie Postkarten, sie können leicht abgefangen und von jedermann gelesen werden.
Rechtschreibprüfung ist ein absolutes Muss. Es gibt nichts schlimmeres, als eine E-Mail voller Rechtschreib- und Grammatikfehler zu empfangen (v.a. von jemandem, der mit Sprache arbeitet)!
Drum prüfe… Vor dem Versenden die E-Mail nochmal durchlesen, am besten laut. So stellt man sicher, dass alles klar und deutlich rüber kommt und dass im Eifer des Gefechts keine Worte ausgelassen oder gar die falschen verwendet wurden, denn die erkennt die Rechtschreibprüfung nicht.

Beer & Work

Yes, I'm German. So using beer and work in the same sentence is therefore absolutely normal, you say? Well, it may be more common and less frowned upon to have an alcoholic beverage during lunch time over here, but honestly, I don't drink (alcohol) while working!! (Just liters and liters of water, tea and coffee.)

I still get to use beer and work together, though, because last week I got to interpret a guided tour at a brewery! Yes, you heard that right, a brewery. They had their four best US-salesmen (yes, they were all men) over for a few days, and part of the trip was a tour through the brewery.

I learned tons about the brewing process, both while preparing for the job and during the tour. The guide was an employee who has been with the company for 31 years and really knew his stuff. He was full of funny stories, and there wasn't a question he couldn't answer. I had quite a time trying to keep up with him and the questions from the very interested guys, and in certain parts of the brewery I had to employ every trick of projection I ever learned during my voice performance studies, but I had a great time nonetheless.

The company is also very much connected with its employees, the facility to a large extent planned, built and financed by them, and very up-to-date and in part ahead of the times regarding both technology and sustainability, which is something that always makes me very happy.

Some friends had seriously asked me whether I would get paid in beer (?!), and the tour actually ended with a beer tasting, but since I still had to interpret during the tasting and then drive home afterwards, I had to content myself with a non-alcoholic Weizen, instead of trying the Export, the Pils and the regular Weizen. O well. I can buy plenty with what I earned... ;)

Urlaubscheckliste

Im Gegensatz zur großen Mehrheit meiner Kollegen kommt mein "großer" Urlaub dieses Jahr erst noch, und bevor ich mich nächste Woche aufs Motorrad schwinge, gibt es noch Einiges zu tun, und zwar nicht nur privat! Auch das Büro will Urlaubs-fest gemacht werden, damit ich nicht zu einer überfüllte Mailbox, verärgerten Kunden und einem überzogenen Geschäftskonto zurückkomme. Ich habe zwar Kollegen, die auch im Urlaub Notebook und Mobiltelefon dabei haben, aber ich mache richtig Urlaub und bin völlig incommunicado! Keine E-Mails, keine (geschäftlichen) Telefonate, nichts! Schließlich will ich mich erholen...

Deshalb habe ich eine Checkliste erstellt, damit auch nichts vergessen wird:

Regelmäßigen Kunden mehrere Woche vorher (je nach durchschnittlichem Auftragsvolumen 2-4 Wochen) per E-Mail Bescheid geben, dass das Büro von-bis geschlossen sein wird. Eventuell für Notfälle Kontaktdaten von (zuverlässigen und vertrauenswürdigen) Kollegen angeben, wobei das nicht jedermanns Sache ist.
2 Wochen vorher E-Mail-Signatur mit Hinweis (bei mir in drei Sprachen) versehen, wann das Büro geschlossen ist, warum, und wann es wieder offen ist.
Automatische Abwesenheitsmeldung der E-Mail (Auto-Reply) einrichten, mit den gleichen Daten wie oben.
Anrufbeantworter-Ansage ändern.
Bei längerer Abwesenheit Blog-Beiträge schreiben und deren spätere Veröffentlichung einrichten.
Back-up aller Daten, am besten Festplatte spiegeln, auf externen Speicher (externe Festplatte, online etc.) - man weiß nie, was dem Computer alles so einfällt während man unterwegs ist, und zum "blauen Bildschirm des Todes" zurück zukommen ist kein Spaß!
Sicherstellen, dass genügend Geld auf dem Geschäftskonto ist, so dass alle automatischen Überweisungen und Abbuchungen, die während der Abwesenheit fällig werden, auch gedeckt sind.
Alle elektronischen Geräte ausstecken (außer Anrufbeantworter, natürlich).
Und das Wichtigste: Kopf abschalten!!!! Urlaub ist zum Aus- und Entspannen, und genau das habe ich vor...

Interpretation of/at a wedding

Last week I was the interpreter at a German-Australian wedding "out in the country". I had requested and received the mayor's speech beforehand so I could translate it - anyone who has ever interpreted at a wedding knows how fond the officials are of quotes, poems, pithy sayings and clever plays of words, and how hard it is to translate those off the cuff?!

The speech consisted of five pages and was full of typos and grammatical errors. When I spoke with the registrar, she said: "Yes, we know he likes to talk, but he'll shorten it when he notices people starting to loose interest." Great, I thought. The speech already sounded long-winded just reading it.

I imagined the mayor in question to be a prime example of a country official: short, stout, probably red-faced and with a heavy Franconian accent. (Not that that's a bad thing! After all, I live in the country and am married to a man who speaks with a heavy Franconian accent!) And giving that speech, he would be... well, long-winded.
When I finally met him, I was almost shocked at how spot-on my imagination had been!
He was very jovial, and one of the first things he said to me was: "I'm not going to follow that speech too closely, probably going to add some things, but that's not a problem, is it?" "Of course not!" (What else could I say?)

To top things off, he was quite hard to understand at times, and it was only due to my marriage that I was able to understand what he was saying at times. Afterwards he told me that he had had a stroke and that's why he had problems enunciating... Which was also why he had me read all the official documents, in German and in English, although I didn't know why at the time. He just handed them to me and said: "You read that, you'll do a much better job than me, I'm sure." Good thing I read so well, it didn't bother me to do it.
But I wonder what he would have done if I had refused to do it. After all, there are no few interpreters out there who are not very good at reading out loud, or doing things spontaneously, for that matter... (maybe not the right profession for them, but that's just how it is, and not only in the interpreting business.)

This probably sounds like it was a terrible job, but actually, it was the most fun I had interpreting at a wedding ceremony ever! The things he added to his speech were ok to translate (and the wedding party was in a great mood and went along with everything we threw at them), I was able to follow his speech, even if he left out stuff and jumped around, he joked quite a bit, and I translated everything he said, to the great amusement of the English-speaking group (which made up more than half of the wedding party I would say). I have never laughed so much at an official act, nor experienced such a relaxed and fun wedding.

And I had feared it to be awful, or at least awkward?! Just goes to show how easy it is to misjudge people and events by only partial information...

Buchhaltung und Bilanzierung - und ein kleines Twitter-RL-Treffen

Letzte Woche war ich in Leipzig für ein Seminar des BDÜ LV Sachsen. Da es schon um 10 Uhr morgens los ging und die A9 bekanntlicherweise viele Baustellen hat, bin ich lieber schon am Freitagnachmittag losgefahren und habe in Leipzig übernachtet. (Das mit dem Stau-Umgehen hat zwar nicht so ganz geklappt, aber egal...)

Ein weiterer Bonus dafür, dass ich schon am Abend vorher in Leipzig war, war, dass ich endlich eine Kollegin in natura kennen lernen durfte, die ich bisher nur über Twitter kannte. Es war trotz der späten Stunde eine sehr nette Sache, wir haben uns prächtig verstanden und über alles mögliche und unmögliche bezüglich Übersetzen, Dolmetschen und der Problematik von Ost und West unterhalten, und wir kamen zu dem Schluss, dass es wenig sinnvoll ist, sich online anders zu verhalten als im wirklichen Leben, denn irgendwann fällt man damit gewaltig auf die Nase, und das nicht nur privat - und v.a. als Einzelunternehmer ist das mehr als nur ungünstig!

Aber zurück zum Seminar:

Obwohl ich meine Buchhaltung von Anfang meiner Selbständigkeit an alleine gemacht habe und kürzlich ein großes Lob seitens meines Steuerberaters bekommen habe, dass ich ihn eigentlich gar nicht bräuchte, hielt ich es für eine gute Idee, mich auf einem speziell für meinen Beruf zugeschnittenen Seminar zu informieren - schließlich kann man immer dazu lernen. Und das habe ich auch tatsächlich!

Der Referent, Matthias Unger von Unger & Partner aus Berlin, seines Zeichens Rechtsanwalt und Steuerberater, hat es geschafft, dieses an sich eher trockene Thema nicht nur anschaulich zu vermitteln, sondern hat auch geduldig jede Frage beantwortet, die wir ihm stellten. Und die Gruppe beinhaltete alles vom Kurz-vor-der-Selbständigkeit-Stehendem bis zum alten Hasen. Außerdem gab es auch ausführliche Unterlagen zum Mitnehmen.

Nachdem Herr Unger erst einmal die Grundbegriffe der Buchhaltung erklärt hatte, legte er dar, welche Dinge für Freiberufler, die ja an sich nicht buchführungspflichtig sind, trotzdem sinnvoll sind, teilweise zu Darstellungszwecken gegenüber dem Finanzamt, teilweise zum eigenen Überblick. Er gab praktische Tipps wie man auch als Freiberufler seine kleine Buchführung organisiert und erklärte u.a. was es mit Belegen und den GDPdU auf sich hat.

Alles in Allem fand ich das Seminar sehr informativ. Ich habe wieder einiges an Neuem gelernt und konnte etliches mitnehmen. Einiges davon habe ich auch schon umgesetzt, nämlich mir ein tatsächliches Kassenbuch zugelegt, in das ich meine seltenen Bareingänge mit der Hand eintrage, und ein zweites Girokonto eröffnet, damit meine geschäftlichen und privaten Einnahmen und Ausgaben fein säuberlich getrennt sind, auch auf den Kontoauszügen, denn die möchte das Finanzamt bei einer Prüfung sehen.

Und wie handhaben meine Kolleginnen und Kollegen und andere Leser dieses Blogs dieses Thema? Welche Art der Buchhaltung praktiziert ihr?

Two languages, same mistake

I was reading The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame - it's a children's story, I know, but it's a classic, too, and I've never read it, so there - when I came across a paragraph that just left me speechless. It's towards the end of the book, after Toad has escaped from prison and been rescued from the river by his friends, who tell him that his ancestral home, Toad Hall, has been taken over by weasels and stoats. Here's the part I'm talking about:

The Toad, having finished his breakfast, picked up a stout stick and

swung it vigorously, belabouring imaginary animals. "I'll learn 'em

to steal my house!" he cried. "I'll learn 'em, I'll learn 'em!"

"Don't say 'learn 'em,' Toad," said the Rat, greatly shocked. "It's

not good English."

"What are you always nagging at Toad for?" inquired the Badger, rather

peevishly. "What's the matter with his English? It's the same what I

use myself, and if it's good enough for me, it ought to be good enough

for you!"

"I'm very sorry," said the Rat humbly. "Only I think it ought to be

'teach 'em,' not 'learn 'em.'"

"But we don't want to teach 'em," replied the Badger. "We want to

learn 'em -- learn 'em, learn 'em! And what's more, we're going to

do it, too!"

Where I live, in Southern Germany, it is very common to hear people say "Ich lerne dir das" instead of "Ich bringe dir das bei" or "Ich lehre dich das" (which is fairly high-brow and probably never actually spoken although the more correct version) - exactly the same phrase Toad and Badger use, which is incorrect in English, too, apparently!

Who would have thunk... ;)

Voice-over für Lohengrin

Letzte Woche hatte ich den bis dato interessantesten und spannendsten Auftrag meiner Karriere als Übersetzerin und Dolmetscherin: Ich durfte für die Bayreuther Festspiele die Voice-overs für die Interviews aufnehmen, die während der live Übertragung online in den Pausen gezeigt wurden.

Die Interviews (ca. 2 Stunden) waren mit den Sängern der Hauptcharaktere, dem Konzertmeister, dem Dirigenten, dem Bühnenbildner, etc., also genau mein Spezialgebiet, und auf Deutsch, sollten online aber auch auf Englisch zu hören sein. Meine Aufgabe war es also, genau das möglich zu machen. Ursprünglich hatten die Filmleute gedacht, dass ich das mal eben so simultan dolmetsche und sie das aufnehmen, aber als ich vorschlug, dass es doch professionell klingen sollte (immerhin ist es u.a. von Siemens gesponsert) und es besser wäre, wenn ich die Texte auf Englisch ablesen könnte, sind sie sofort auf meinen Vorschlag eingegangen.

Das Ergebnis sah dann so aus, dass ich die transkribierten Texte ein paar Tage vorher erhielt und in aller Ruhe (naja...) übersetzt habe und dann mit den übersetzten Texten auf Papier - wann habe ich das letzte Mal eine Übersetzung ausgedruckt? - nach Bayreuth ins Tonstudio gefahren bin.

Dort erwartete mich eine kleine Kabine mit Mikro und Bildschirm, auf dem ich die Interviews gesehen habe, während ich das Ganze mit meiner Stimme auf Englisch übersprochen habe. Alles in Allem lief es wirklich gut, der Tontechniker/Cutter und die Redakteurin konnten gar nicht glauben, dass das mein erstes Mal war und wollten gleich meine Karte habe (sehe ich da eine zweite Karriere als "Stimme" am Horizont?)!

Spannend wurde es, als herauskam, dass eines der Interviews gestrichen wurde, weil die befragte Person nicht mehr im Ensemble war, und die anderen Interviews deswegen verlängert werden mussten. Das bedeutete, dass vorher gestrichene Teile wieder eingefügt wurden, von denen ich aber den Text nicht übersetzt hatte. Das Problem lösten wir so, dass die Redakteurin während wir Mittagspause machten die fehlenden Texte auf Deutsch abtippte und ich diese dann Stegreif während der Aufnahmen quasi doch live dolmetschte. Das ging auch erstaunlich gut, v.a. weil ich mir die kniffeligen Teile vorher noch mit Stichworten versehen hatte.

Außerdem waren da noch die Einleitungen zu den einzelnen Akten, von denen ich ebenfalls vorher keine Texte hatte. Das sie aber nicht so lang waren, habe ich sie mir auf Deutsch angehört und gleich ins Englische abgetippt, was ich dann für die Aufnahmen abgelesen habe.

Insgesamt war ich dann zwar doch 8 Stunden lang dort, aber es hat unheimlich Spaß gemacht, nicht zuletzt, weil auch meine zwei Komplizen wirklich gut drauf waren und sich von den Problemen die gute Laune nicht verderben ließen. Am Ende habe ich gemerkt, dass nicht nur meine Stimme, sondern auch ich langsam müde wurde und mein Mund und meine Zunge nicht mehr so wollten wie ich, wir also doch einige Stopps und "den Satz bitte nochmal" hatten, was aber wohl ganz normal und kein Problem ist. Ziemlich platt, verschwitzt (keine Lüftung in der Kabine wegen der Geräusche), aber sehr begeistert bin ich dann wieder Richtung Süden gefahren... ich hätte wirklich nichts dagegen, bald wieder meine Stimme herzugeben...

Komplizierte Textpassagen übersetzen

Diese Woche saß ich wieder über ein paar nicht-technischen Texten, die es teilweise so richtig in sich hatten. Gesprochenes in lesbare Form zu bringen ist ja schon in einer Sprache schwierig, aber dann das Ganze noch in eine andere zu übersetzen...!

Manchmal "flutscht" es ja so richtig, da fliegen die Finger über die Tasten, und wohl geformte Sätze fließen förmlich aus dem Hirn auf den Bildschirm. Und dann - ein Satz, eine Wendung, und mir fällt erstmal gar nichts ein. Oder nur klotzige Formulierungen, die ich eigentlich am liebsten gar nicht tippen würde, so unbeholfen klingen sie. Aber das ist ja auch ein Vorteil des Computers: man kann quasi "auf dem Bildschirm denken", Wörter aneinander reihen, verschieben, löschen, ersetzen, bis es passt.

Nur manchmal scheint es einfach nicht passen zu wollen. Mir hilft es dann oft, den sperrigen Satz stehen zu lassen und weiter zu übersetzen - mein Unterbewusstsein rattert im Hintergrund weiter. Nicht selten kommt mir dann eine halbe Stunde später die zündende Idee. Oder während ich eine Runde mit den Hunden drehe. Oder beim Gespräch mit jemand anderem (solange es sich nicht um vertrauliche Information handelt, natürlich).

Aber manchmal habe ich diesen zeitlichen Luxus nicht, und dann heißt es: Gehirnzellen auf Höchstleistung fahren und eine Lösung finden. Dabei helfen mir ein paar Überlegungen:

Was steht dann da eigentlich genau im Ausgangstext? Ist der überhaupt eindeutig, klar, verständlich und gut formuliert (was ja leider oft genug nicht der Fall ist)? Ist er am Ende vielleicht sogar fehlerhaft? Vielleicht hilft es ja, ihn umzuformulieren, in kleinere Stücke zu teilen, zu vereinfachen - was ist denn eigentlich die Grundaussage?
Wie genau muss ich mich ans Original halten? Hier spielt natürlich die Textart und das Zielpublikum eine wichtige Rolle, aber selbst ein technischer Text darf auch mal etwas freier übersetzt werden, und auch ein literarischer kann etwas "wörtlicher" sein - wenn es angebracht ist.
Kann ich eventuell etwas weglassen? Oder dazu fügen? Das fällt mir hin und wieder schwer, aber dann erinnere ich mich daran, dass ich als Übersetzerin ja auch schöpferisch und kreativ tätig bin und mich eben gerade nicht an den Ursprungstext klammern darf, sondern den Inhalt in die andere Sprache transportieren muss, so dass er dort genauso und genau so verstanden wird.
Und ganz wichtig: Was steht davor und danach? Es ist sehr leicht sich so an einem Satz fest zu beißen, dass man quasi "betriebsblind" wird und die Lösung oder der entscheidende Hinweis einen sozusagen gleich beißt - wenn man nur ein Stück weiter lesen oder zurückblättern würde!

Und wenn ich dann das Ergebnis lese, bin ich häufig erstaunt, dass diese wunderbaren Wortgebilde auf meinem Mist gewachsen, äh, aus meiner Feder geflossen sind. :-)

Erfolgreich Verkaufsgespräche führen

Vor einiger Zeit habe ich an einem eintägigen Seminar zum Thema Verkaufsgespräche teilgenommen. Alles, was ich dort gelernt habe, hier in einem Blog-Beitrag aufzuschreiben wäre einerseits etwas viel und andererseits will ich ja nicht alle Tricks verraten... Aber ein paar möchte ich doch weiter geben - ich bin halt doch kein Egoist. ;)

Zum Thema Telefonate:

20-Sekunden-Regel: Innerhalb dieser Zeit sollte man es irgendwie schaffen der Person am anderen Ende der Leitung Lob und Wertschätzung auszudrücken. Klingt zunächst etwas seltsam, lässt sich aber vielleicht anhand von Beispielen erklären. Lob bezieht sich auf die Person, z.B. "Schön, dass ich Sie erreiche", Wertschätzung betrifft eine Handlung, z.B. "Danke, dass Sie für mich Zeit haben". Auf jeden Fall nie so etwas wie "Darf ich stören" sagen, denn hier haben die Worte meist genau diese Wirkung.
Wenn ich anrufe um einen Termin auszumachen, muss ich auch den Termin verkaufen, nicht mein Produkt oder meine Dienstleistung, d.h. die Vorteile eines Termins mit mir, nicht des Produkts oder der Dienstleistung anpreisen. Das Motto lautet: neugierig machen, aber das Wesentliche verhüllen.

Zum Thema Preis:

Die Frage nach dem Preis sollte erst in der zweiten Gesprächshälfte kommen, wenn klar ist, dass der Kunde kaufen möchte. Kommt sie zu früh, am besten eine Preisspanne oder eine Hausnummer mit Varianten nennen.
Ehe man einen Preis nennt, nochmal alles aufzählen, was der Kunde dafür bekommt, und dann schließen mit "... dafür müssen Sie xyz Euro investieren."
Es ist wichtig, seine eigene preisliche Schmerzgrenze zu kennen und diese auch klar zu machen. Auf keinen Fall breit schlagen lassen!
Wenn Rabatte, dann nur einstellig! Dies ist wie ein kleiner Sieg für den Verhandlungspartner. Besser sind stufenweise Rabatte (wenn überhaupt), z.B. bei einem Umsatz von 12.000 Euro im Monat gibt es 3% Nachlass, bei 20.000 Euro im Monat 5% etc.

Zum Thema Selbstvermarktung:

Hohes Fachwissen und Kompetenz alleine reichen nicht, um einen Kunden zu gewinnen. Auch die (notwendige) Qualität allein bringt keine neuen Aufträge. Am wichtigsten sind die Alleinstellungsmerkmale, und diese sollte man auch hervorheben.
Nicht der Produkt-/Dienstleistungsnutzen zählt, sondern der Kundennutzen. Beispiel: Niemand braucht eine Waschmaschine, aber alle wollen saubere Wäsche.

Essential Office Equipment: Second Monitor

I know, opinions are split on this one, but I have been working with two monitors ever since I started working as a freelancer full-time, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

First I used an additional monitor to the one on my laptop, then, when I had my desktop PC custom-build, I bought a larger monitor (22") as main one and kept the other, smaller one (17") as extra. I have them set up so that the extra monitor is to the right of the main one.

I use the larger one as main monitor, because it lets me view two documents next to each other, e.g. two text documents or a text document and a pdf, when I am proofreading, checking formatting etc. It also offers lots of space, i.e. information (TM view, termbank view etc.), when I work with my translation tools, which makes things a lot easier and faster in my opinion.

The smaller monitor to the right is my reference monitor. Here I have my web browser, my dictionaries and any reference documents open, so I don't have to constantly switch between programs while translating. Another plus is that I can write e-mails on the main computer and have any documents, websites etc. I might need to peruse or reference to in the mail open on the second monitor, again making switching back and forth unnecessary.

I cannot imagine working with only one monitor - regardless how large - anymore, and have a hard time adjusting whenever I have to work on my laptop and just that one monitor. A colleague of mine is even thinking about adding a third monitor, but aside from the fact that I'm not sure how to connect a third monitor to the computer, I'm not sure what I would use it for. I'll probably buy a larger monitor in the future and then use my current main monitor as second one, but then I'd probably toss out the smallest one. Three would be just too much - and besides, I would need a bigger desk, too - again! - , so, no, no third monitor for me (for now).

Neuer BDÜ-Mitgliedsausweis

Lange versprochen, fast genauso lange vorbereitet und heiß ersehnt, jetzt halte ich ihn endlich in Händen: meinen neuen BDÜ-Mitgliedsausweis.

Der alte ähnelte mehr einem laminierten Schülerausweis als dem handlichen Beweis der Zugehörigkeit zu einem Berufsverband, wobei das Photo nicht gerade half (ja, ich habe es selber hin geschickt, aber ich hatte damals kein anderes).

Der neue hat zwar die gleiche Information, weist allerdings zusätzlich noch meine Sprachen aus und hat alle Eigenschaften eines professionellen Mitgliedsausweises, inklusive besserem Photo und garantiert längerer Haltbarkeit. Ich hatte zwar noch gehofft, dass auch der längliche Schlitz an der oberen Kante dazu kommt, damit man ihn auch als Namensschild verwenden kann, aber diese Variante wurde wohl überstimmt. Schade eigentlich. Dann wäre er für mich wirklich perfekt gewesen.

So here is a list (with links) of 10 of the language blogs I read regularly, in no particular order, which I think are not only helpful and interesting, but also fun.

1. Thoughts on Translation: A blog by Corinne McKay, full of great articles about the translation industry. she gets lots of comments (as opposed to me...).

2. false friends, good and bad translation, Denglisch, Tipps für Übersetzer: A great blog by Martin Crellin on the pitfalls of German to English translation, and always fun to read, too!

3. Übersetzer-Blog: This is a German blog by two of my colleagues who only started blogging a while ago. But their content is great and gives wonderful insights into the working life of an interpreter and an architectural translator.

4. Musings from an overworked translator: This blog by Jill Sommer offers lots of insider information and inspiration - she's a veritable translation machine.

5. Separated by a common language: In her blog, Lynne Murphy, an American who lives in the U.K., explains the differences between American and British English, which I personally find very helpful.

100 Tage Übersetzer-Blog

Zwar ein bisschen verspätet, aber trotzdem...

Zwei Kolleginnen von mir haben neu mit dem Bloggen angefangen und ein erstes Resumé gezogen, dem ich voll zustimmen kann. Ein guter Anfang, finde ich.

Zwischen philosophischer Tiefe, „Ich blogge, also bin ich“, und „digitalem Nihilismus“ siedelt der Medienwissenschaftler Geert Lovink in einem ZEIT-Interview das interaktive Web 2.0 an.
Denkarbeit sichtbar machen
Bloggen, so wie wir es verstehen, ist die Möglichkeit, die Arbeit einer Dolmetscherin und einer Übersetzerin transparenter werden zu lassen. Denn anders als bei einem Flugzeugbauer, der hinterher sogar in seinen Ideen fliegen kann, oder bei einem Stadtplaner, der hinterher auf den von ihm geplanten Straßen flanieren kann, ist von unserer Arbeit kaum etwas zu sehen. Eine Übersetzung hat gerade noch den Vorteil, vielleicht sogar gedruckt zu werden, aber soll natürlich nicht als Übersetzung erkennbar sein. Und das flüchtige Wort beim Dolmetschen, es verhallt. Keiner kann je wieder nachvollziehen, wie viel Mühe und Vorbereitung dafür notwendig war.
Denkwelten kommunizieren
Daher rührt vielleicht auch unser Wunsch, andere an unseren unterschiedlichen Denkwelten, in die wir regelmäßig abtauchen, teilhaben zu lassen. Wir bauen eben keine Flugzeuge und planen keine Prachtboulevards, aber wir arbeiten mit Sprachen und Sprache bedeutet Kommunikation und Kommunikation geschieht heute im Netz.

Essential Office Equipment: UPS

I finally got around to purchasing one very important piece of office equipment, which I have been meaning to do for quite a while - a UPS (uninterrupted power supply). However, I didn't want to just buy any old - dare I say "cheap"? - device, so I did some in-depth research on what would best suit me needs and purposes and still be affordable (although the price really should be secondary - lost work, or worse, lost or corrupted files due to a power outage can be expensive in more way than one).

After looking around on various Internet platforms and studying brands and, most importantly, reviews, I finally decided to purchase the APC Back-UPS CS 500.

Set-up (connecting the battery and the various cables to and from the PC and the outlet) and installation of the software were a matter of minutes, and although it said to charge the battery for at least 8 hours before first use, it showed a completely charged battery upon plug-in already. I still left it connected to the power over night, though, just to be on the safe side.

The cool thing about the included software is that it shuts down the PC after a certain time period on battery power, which you can specify. This means, should I for whatever reason not be in the office during a power outage, the PC will shut down safely and in an orderly manner (after there had been an outage last week while I was out running some errands, this was especially important to me). Usually, however, the power outages around here are only brief, so a shut-down is not necessary.

I did a quick test of the UPC by flipping the switch on the power strip to which everything is connected, and voilá - the PC continued running as if nothing had happened! Exactly what I had been looking for.

The included surge protection is another bonus, although that is part of the power strip already, but double-safe won't hurt.

I only have the PC and one of the two monitors I work with hooked up to the UPS, but that should be sufficient for my needs. I could add the second monitor and my printer, as well, but I would need extra cables and adapters, since the UPS only accepts IEC connectors (the only slight drawback in my opinion).

Firmenführung SEDA GERMANY

Freitag, der 13. Mai, war diesmal überhaupt kein Unglückstag, sondern vielmehr eine Gelegenheit für 10 Übersetzerinnen und Übersetzer aus ganz Mittel- und Oberfranken und noch weiter sich die Verpackungsfirma SEDA GERMANY in Neuhaus an der Pegnitz einmal von innen anzusehen. Organisiert wurde das Ganze von yours truly in meiner Funktion als Co-Leiterin der BDÜ-Regionalgruppe Nürnberg/Fürth/Erlangen/Bamberg.

Vom Personalleiter aufs Herzlichste begrüßt, gab es erst einmal einen Überblick über die Geschichte des ursprünglich fränkischen Familienbetriebs und die rasante und trotz der Wirtschaftskrise positive Entwicklung der letzten Jahre, sowie einen Einblick in das hervorragende Ausbildungsprogramm im inzwischen italienisch geführten Unternehmen, das einen Jahresumsatz von ca. 80 Mio. Euro macht und in Neuhaus 300 Mitarbeiter beschäftigt. Dann gab es Gelegenheit Fragen zu stellen, was auch ausgiebig genutzt wurde.

Anschließend führte einer der Produktionsleiter die Gruppe in die Fertigungs- und Lagerhallen, wo Trinkbecher, Faltschachteln und andere Papierverpackungen hergestellt werden. Da es sich um ein Unternehmen aus dem lebensmittelnahen Bereich handelt, erhielten wir aus Sicherheits- und Hygienegründen Schutzkleidung, Haarnetze und Ohrenstöpsel bevor wir die Produktion betraten. Es war wirklich äußerst interessant zu sehen, wie aus dem weißen Papier, das in Bögen oder Rollen angeliefert wird, zum Beispiel ein Becher für den Kaffee unterwegs oder ein Behälter für Fischstäbchen oder Burger wird. Verschiedene Druckverfahren, teilweise speziell dort in Zusammenarbeit mit den Maschinenherstellern entwickelt, und jede Menge Maschinen, zusammen mit einem inzwischen fast komplett automatisierten Palettisierungssystem arbeiten zusammen, so dass täglich tausende Becher die Firma in den gesamten Deutsch-sprachigen Raum verlassen.

Erfreulich war nicht nur die Beteiligung dreier Kolleginnen der benachbarten Regionalgruppe Hof/Bayreuth, sondern auch der Überraschungsbesuch aus München und Aschaffenburg. So konnte die leider etwas dürftige Beteiligung unserer Regionalgruppe kompensiert werden. Es ist für die meisten von uns schwierig, ihre Teilnahme an einer Veranstaltung tagsüber und unter der Woche zu organisieren und so mussten einige angemeldete KollegInnen zum Teil sehr kurzfristig wieder absagen. Eine Betriebsbesichtigung kann ja aber nur an einem Werktag stattfinden und ist immer ein großer Gewinn für diejenigen, die es schaffen, dabei zu sein. Gerade wer sich im Fachbereich Technik oder Wirtschaft spezialisiert hat, profitiert enorm vom „Anschauungsunterricht” vor Ort. Daher sind wir als RegionalgruppenleiterInnen bemüht, immer wieder solche Besichtigungen zu organisieren und hoffen, bald wieder eine anbieten zu können.

Starthilfe

Letzte Woche erhielt ich einen Anruf von einer Kollegin, die ich ein paar Tage zuvor bei einer von mir organisierten Firmenführung kennengelernt hatte. Sie wollte sich fürs Organisieren bedanken und außerdem wissen, ob ich ihr nicht ein paar Tipps geben könnte, wie sie sich als Übersetzerin etablieren könnte, da sie sich erst vor Kurzem selbständig gemacht hat. Ich hatte zwar genau dann keine Zeit für ein längeres Gespräch, sagte ihr aber, dass sie mich gerne am Abend nochmal anrufen könnte, was sie auch prompt tat.

Während des Gesprächs stellte sich heraus, dass sie wohl schon ein paar Mal andere Kolleginnen und Kollegen um Starthilfe gebeten hatte, aber nur Absagen erhielt, nach dem Motto: Das musst du schon selbst herausfinden!

Das hat mich zunächst ein bisschen geschockt, schließlich geht es ja nicht darum, irgendwelche Geheimnisse auszuplaudern, sondern einer Kollegin, die gerade am Anfang dieser aufregenden Reise der professionellen Sprachmittlung steht, genau diesen Anfang etwas leichter zu machen. Es gibt jede Menge Tipps zum Thema Marketing, Profilierung, Spezialisierung, Vergütung, etc. mit denen ich nicht nur dem Neuling, sondern letztlich auch der gesamten Branche und somit auch mir selbst helfe ohne gleichzeitig meine "Betriebsgeheimnisse" (wenn ich denn welche habe) preis zu geben.

Nach dem Gespräch überlegte ich, warum die Kollegen (von denen ich einige persönlich kenne und das so gar nicht zu ihnen passt) so negativ auf die Anfragen reagiert haben könnten. Die einzige Erklärung, die mir plausibel erscheint, ist, dass besagte Anfragen vielleicht nicht so gut formuliert waren und als "Gib mir deine Kundendatenbank und sag mir deine Preise" rüber kamen, was aber wohl kaum die Absicht gewesen sein dürfte. Die verschiedenen kulturellen Hintergründe haben vermutlich auch eine Rolle gespielt, was aber ja gerade bei Übersetzern und Dolmetschern eigentlich kein Hindernis darstellen sollte.

Wie dem auch sei, vermutlich gab es Missverständnisse auf beiden Seiten, und ich kann nur allen Kolleginnen und Kollegen, erfahren und neu, raten, zum einen nicht zu vergessen, dass der Ton die Musik macht, und zum anderen nicht gleich jeden als Konkurrenten zu sehen. Ich kann mich nur immer wiederholen: Nur gemeinsam sind wir letztendlich stark!

Letzten Dienstag habe ich auf der Feier anlässlich des 65. Geburtstags des Inhabers eines mittelständischen Unternehmens die Reden für die ca. 50 nicht-Deutsch-sprachigen Gäste gedolmetscht, ein Auftrag, den ich über eine Kollegin erhalten hatte (siehe hier). Es war ziemlich anstrengend, weil die Redner unheimlich schnell und teilweise in unvollständigen Sätzen sprachen, und ich hatte das Gefühl, dass ich selbst ebenfalls teilweise Unverständliches von mir gegeben habe, aber die Rückmeldungen waren durch die Bank positiv, was mal wieder beweist, dass man selbst sein schlimmster Kritiker ist.
Nachdem der offizielle Teil vorbei war, wollte ich eigentlich wieder den Heimweg antreten, wurde aber von der Dame, die mich engagiert hatte, fast schon genötigt, zu bleiben, etwas zu essen, an ihrem Tisch sei noch ein Platz frei. Also fand ich mich zwischen einem Malaysier und einem Australier wieder und durfte das wirklich leckere Buffet genießen. Die Unterhaltung am Tisch war sehr angeregt, die Stimmung überhaupt sehr gut, und als dann die Live-Band anfing zu spielen, fehlte eigentlich nur noch ein Tanzpartner, um den Abend perfekt zu machen - und der fand sich doch tatsächlich auch?!
Somit endete mein eigentlich 2-stündiger Dolmetscheinsatz erst nach 5 Stunden und beinhaltete auch noch leckeres Essen, viel Spaß und die Gelegenheit, mal wieder ausgiebig das Tanzbein zu schwingen. Wenn doch jeder Auftrag so schön wäre...

The power of "we"

At the interpreting assignment yesterday, my usual partner in crime was on vacation, so I had the pleasure of meeting a new colleague. She is just starting out, both as an interpreter and a translator, and of course was full of questions on how to find work and clients.
As expected, she asked for my "secret" after hearing that I had started freelancing not so terribly long ago myself, yet am having to turn down work, but as I have had to tell others before her, too, there is no such thing as "the" method or trick by which to find clients and jobs. I can only say what I do.
My "secret" is really simple: be visible. Get out there and network and spread the word about yourself and your services. How? Here is what I would recommend:

Always have business cards with you to hand out at every opportunity - you never know when and where you may meet the next potential client.
Go to where your potential clients are, e.g. trade fairs.
Get involved in your association, and make use of the local meetings and networks.
Join online communities, both for translators and interpreters and general business networks.
Participate in forum discussions.
Spruce up your website and update it regularly, e.g. with blog posts or a calendar showing your next assignments.
Don't forget to continuously learn, via workshops and seminars, and to talk about it, so people know that your skills and knowledge are up-to-date.
Go to live networking events, and above all not (only) those within the language industry, although those are important, too.

Something I read recently rings very true in this context:

It's a human tendency to overestimate what we can do by ourselves and to underestimate what we can do as a group.

Especially in these times of ever greater and more extensive assignments, a reliable network of colleagues is key to not only being able to accept jobs you could never do by yourself, but also to your personal health and sanity - taking time off for yourself without having to worry about losing clients is only possible if you have a network of colleagues you can refer to without having to wonder whether the result will be up to (your) standard or whether they will "steal" your client.
I firmly believe that the times of the translator or interpreter as lone warrior are over. Our colleagues are not (only) our competition, but rather a valuable source of support, experience and knowledge. Just look at the numerous forums where you can ask for help on strange or unusual translations, ask about the reliability and solvency of a potential client or hear what others have done in a particular situation. We don't have to do everything ourselves and repeat every mistake and learn everything anew for ourselves. By working together and sharing our knowledge we will not "give away trade secrets" or "hurt our business". Ultimately we only benefit ourselves as a profession and as individuals.

BDÜ-JMV 2011

Es ist zwar schon wieder ein paar Tage her, aber ich bin zur Zeit so beschäftigt, dass ich erst jetzt dazu komme, über die diesjährige Jahresmitgliederversammlung des BDÜ-Landesverbands Bayern zu schreiben.

Dieses Jahr fand sie wieder in Erlangen statt, d.h. ich hatte nur eine kurze Anfahrt, worüber ich sehr froh war. Es waren auch erfreulich viele Kolleginnen und Kollegen da - mit Vollmachten waren insgesamt 88 Mitglieder vertreten -, die auch begeistert mit diskutiert haben.

Es gab ja auch eine Menge zu besprechen und abzustimmen: die zukünftige Öffentlichkeitsarbeit des Landesverbands, die neue interne Terminologiedatenbank, die drohenden Rahmenverträge der Gerichte, die Erweiterung des Vorstands von fünf auf sieben Mitglieder, und die Wahl der vier neuen Vorstandsmitglieder.

Ich hatte ursprünglich einmal angedacht, mich auch aufstellen zu lassen, aber die letzten Monate waren v.a. privat sehr turbulent, ohne nennenswerte Besserung in Sicht, so dass ich mich für dieses Jahr darauf beschränkt habe mich als Kassenprüferin zu Verfügung zu stellen. Meine Tätigkeiten als Regionalgruppenleiterin und im Redaktionsteam für das BayernInfo gibt es ja auch noch, und ich denke damit und mit eventuellen Workshops und Seminaren werde ich gut ausgelastet sein.

In den Pausen habe ich natürlich auch wieder eifrig Beziehungen gepflegt, schließlich sieht man manche Kolleginnen und Kollegen sonst das Jahr über gar nicht. Und bei der wirklich guten Verpflegung und dem herrlichen Sonnenschein konnte man sich auch sehr gut austauschen.

Auch das Treffen der Regionalgruppenleiter am Tag vorher war sehr informativ und bereichernd. Zum anschließenden gemeinsamen Abendessen sage ich nur soviel: indisches Essen unter flackernden Lichtern kann erstaunlich hohen Unterhaltungswert haben!

Ich bin auf jeden Fall froh in einem so aktiven Landesverband zu sein, der wirklich viel für seine Mitglieder tut, und freue mich schon auf dieses Jahr und die nächsten Treffen.

"The more I charge you, the more pressure I put on myself to perform for you.
The client who grinds me on price is the least satisfied. He gets less attention from me and is most likely to be pissed off at me. And I don't really care, because to be honest, I resent him. The very fact that he is on my roster reminds me that I'm part prostitute. For him, I'm doing it for the money and as it isn't very much money I'm not troubled by not doing it well. He pays me a paltry sum, I perform poorly, he gets angry and I resent him. We can have that type of relationship if you like.
The client who pays me the premium gets my best work. He's the one I wake up in the middle of the night thinking about, wondering if I'm doing all I can to earn his money. When he calls, I jump. Hell, I call him first. I take pride in moving his business. I try to make myself indispensable to him. I imagine that he winces when he opens my bill (he doesn't say), but he thanks me for all I do for him. He’s the one I worry about.
I’m great at what I do, but if someone hires me without giving me the resources (money, time, access) to do a great job, it’s easy for me to rationalize poor performance. When a client gives me everything I ask for, he removes all the obstacles to a high quality outcome. There’s no way for me to rationalize anything less than perfection.
There is no greater pressure than the pressure I put on myself, and the only way you can add to my own sense of pressure is to pay me well. Yelling won’t do it. Neither will threatening to pull your business. My deep sense of obligation comes from you paying me well enough to dispatch all of the excuses. Then I have to prove to you, and, more importantly, to me that I am as good as I say I am.
So, I've given you my price and it's the price that I need to charge to bring a deep sense of obligation to the job. Will I work for less? Probably. Can you negotiate with me? Sure. We can have that type of relationship if you really want me to be that type of designer and you want to be that type of client.
Let's just understand each other before we get started."

Visitenkarten, die Zweite

Ich möchte ja in ein neues Spezialgebiet, nämlich (klassische) Musik, vorstoßen, und das erfordert natürlich auch etwas Arbeit. Vor allem die Akquise ist wichtig, und aus diesem Grund fahre ich morgen nach Frankfurt auf die Musikmesse, um dort mein Gesicht bekannt zu machen und fleißig Visitenkarten zu verteilen. Und genau diese sollten dem Anlass bzw. dem Zweck auch entsprechen, also habe ich eine Visitenkarte entworfen, die speziell für Kunden in der Musikbranche gemacht ist. Konkret heißt das, dass ich meine Uni-Abschlüsse (BA und MM) groß unter meinem Namen stehen habe und erst darunter und kleiner das staatlich geprüft. Auch steht dort nur Englisch und Deutsch, denn mit Spanisch habe ich auf diesem Gebiet keine nennenswerte Erfahrung, und genau die ist es ja, die mich für meine neuen Kunden so interessant macht. Außerdem habe ich als besonderen Clou einen Notenschlüssel aus der Karte gestanzt - damit falle ich bestimmt auf und bleibe in Erinnerung, sodass dann, wenn mein Bewerbungsbrief mit Kurzprofil in 2 Wochen bei den Verlagen eintrifft, der Wiedererkennungseffekt garantiert ist - hoffe ich zumindest! :)

25 Things Translators Should Never Do

I happened upon a New York Times blog post listing the 100 things restaurant staffers should never do — part one and two — and thought the idea good enough to steal (somehow, “no stealing” wasn’t high on our list). Despite the title, many of the don’ts apply more to agencies and their staff. Some to individual translators. And some to any service related job.

Never forget to thank the client for requesting a quote (even if you don’t get the assignment).
Never assume a new client has used translation services before, or the converse. Some customers are new to the experience, and some are savvier than you’d imagine.
Never leave a request for information without a response. If you were on vacation/your computer crashed/you’re thinking of a career change, respond to all inquiries no matter how late. “I’m sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner. I hope everything worked out alright,” confirms your reputation as a professional.
Never try to impress a client by using industry jargon or acronyms. TRADOS often means little to those in the outside world. In emails and conversations, always use the full explanation of a term the first time it is mentioned.
Never tell a client, “That turnaround time is not possible.” Instead try, “Here’s what I can do in that time,” or offer to start delivering parts of the project within the deadline. Chances are good that your client’s deadline isn’t wholly within their control. Instead of relaying to their manager that you said the deadline isn’t possible, they will pick up the phone and call another provider.
On the other hand, never promise a deadline you know you can’t meet. You wouldn’t want a plumber promising to fix your only toilet within a few hours knowing he can’t do it until three days later.
If a deadline seems tight, do not forget to inquire why it is so. If your client needs to quickly review a document for content, you may be able to deliver a translation “For Informational Purposes Only” by their deadline, and follow up with an edited version shortly after.
Never respond to a request for services with an emphasis on how busy you already are with other assignments. You might succeed in showing how in demand you are, but you will likely make them think twice about calling again. Thank the caller for their consideration and drop them a note when your workload lightens up.
Never hesitate to be truthful when necessary. “You may need to use another vendor for that assignment,” shows sincere concern for your client’s project and will encourage them to contact you again. This applies to individual translators — who are more accustomed to the practice of referring colleagues — and to agencies too. Offer a lead if you are able.
Never let your client hear you denigrate other translators or agencies. Although it is important to get today’s assignment, it is vital to leave a positive impression if you want the client to recommend your services to others.
Never miss the chance to show respect for your client’s knowledge of their industry. Focusing primarily on your knowledge of translation may indirectly belittle their input.
Never assume you already know everything you need to know about your language pair(s) or specialty(ies). Translation is one of those professions where you can continue to learn and grow if you remain open-minded.
Never make excuses for your rate; you are offering a professional service. Do the homework to make sure your rates are within industry standards.
Never increase your rate based solely on your perception of the client’s wealth or budget. Their budget is subject to change from month to month, and you might unwittingly price yourself out of a long-term relationship.
Don’t be too rigid about turnaround times or pricing. After an initial quote, there are often ways to negotiate your services to save the client money. Ask the client to prioritize price, schedule, and quality, and offer to work around those priorities.
Never offer a firm quote without looking at the WHOLE source text.
Never forget to ask a client for a style preference or style sheet on especially long or ongoing assignments. It is your job to know that these exist.
Never wait to look at the source text. Examine it as soon as possible even if you are in the middle of another assignment. Two hours before the deadline is too late to ask for a more legible copy.
Never assume your client has thoroughly examined the source text. You may discover text already in the target language, which is good news; or you may discover text in a third language, which is not.
Never contact the client the first time you come across a discrepancy in the source file. The answer you seek may lie somewhere later on in the file.
Never barrage your client with petty questions, like “Which do you prefer, “AM” or “A.M.”? Have your own default in-house style guide. If you want to check the client’s preference for small stylistic issues, send a note with the finished translation leaving the client the option of not responding. For example, “I used ‘AM’ in the translation. Let me know if you’d like me to change it.” Although you may be finished with the project, it’s probable that your client is not and does not have time to discuss such matters.
Never let the client intimidate you into changing a translation you know is correct. Offer to consult a colleague regarding the proposed changes.
As a translator, never charge for reviewing your own translation. It’s a given. As an agency, be clear about what your price includes in terms of editing, proofreading and other QC procedures.
Never forget to ask the client to confirm receipt of the delivered translation.
Never forget that human translation is an organic product. Be open to reviewing completed translations, be willing to admit mistakes, and be prepared to defend yourself with solid resources beyond, “I’ve been doing this a long time.” You may have been doing it wrong for a long time.

Multi-tasking - yes or no?

We all know the saying that women can multi-task and men cannot. And we all know that this is not necessarily true and probably also know more than one example for the complete opposite.

Personally, I am a bit torn about this. On the one hand, I have been multi-tasking since long before I ever heard of it (and no, I don't mean being able to chew gum and cross the street at the same time.) I like to be as efficient as possible, making the best use of my (and others') time and resources.

On the other hand, I often feel that it can be discourteous too. I'm sure you have had this happen to you before: you are talking with someone who is not even looking at you but rather glued to his mobile device, thumbs rapidly moving across the display, while nodding as if listening. But is he really? Talking on the phone while searching for something on the computer, for example, may be helpful if what you are looking for has something to do with the conversation. But if we are honest, oftentimes it doesn't. And that basically means I am only giving the person I am talking to part of my attention, which is something I don't like people doing to me, whether on the phone or in person. Yet I find myself doing it again and again.

Or what about constantly switching between two (or more) tasks? Not exactly doing several things at once, but in a way it is. Can we really give the individual tasks the necessary attention to do them well? Sometimes I wonder...

Interestingly, though, for me it is rare that I can work and listen to music without being distracted by it, but that may have more to do with the fact that I am a musician than with anything else, yet I know of many people who cannot imagine working without something going on in the background. I prefer silence, complete, if possible, and I know I function best when I have it.

I have come across several studies (sorry, can't remember where now) indicating that doing one thing after the other produces better results than multi-tasking, and that even the apparent time savings are lost again having to correct errors that would not have happened if the tasks had been tackled one at a time.

So what are your thoughts? Experiences? Habits? I'm sure there are tasks that are suited very well to be done together, but is it alway the best way?

Und zwar die, keinen Sprachunterricht mehr anzubieten. Überlegt hatte ich es schon länger, und nicht nur, weil nur sehr selten Anfragen dafür kamen. Als ich gestern an der Firma vorbei fuhr, in der ich zuletzt Business English unterrichtet hatte (was inzwischen bald schon wieder zwei Jahre her ist), hing dort ein Schild "Zu verkaufen" - traurige Konsequenz der Wirtschaftskrise, denn der Aufschwung ist eben doch nicht überall angekommen, bzw. nicht rechtzeitig.
Ich bringe Anderen zwar gerne etwas bei, aber der Aufwand fürs Unterrichten (Vorbereitung, Nachbereitung etc.) stand irgendwie nie im Verhältnis zum Verdienst. Da ich außerdem auf dem Land wohne, ist auch eine Tätigkeit in der Stadt, die vielleicht lukrativer wäre, keine wirkliche Option, denn die Fahrtzeit muss ich ja im Aufwand auch mitrechnen.
Letztes Jahr hatte ich ein paar Mal Gelegenheit Workshops bzw. Seminare zu halten, und die Impromptu-Einführung zu memoQ beim letzten BDÜ-Stammtisch hat meine noch keimende Idee bekräftigt, dass ich mich mehr darauf konzentrieren will. Themen habe ich ja bereits einige gesammelt, alle im Zusammenhang mit Computer bzw. Internet/Web 2.0, und dafür besteht definitiv Interesse. Anfragen gab es auch schon, sogar aus dem Nachbar-Landesverband, es ist also vermutlich nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis ich wieder ein Seminar halten darf. Und das löst in mir Vorfreude aus, im Gegensatz zum Unterrichten, was zuletzt ein eher gestresstes Seufzen zur Folge hat.

New love apparently shows...

The faithful readers of my blog will remember how I broke up with my long-time partner, SDL Trados, in December to welcome a new CAT tool into my heart: memoQ. And I must say, I have not looked back or regretted that step one single moment since.

Since I am one of those "click every button and see what happens" kind of persons and taking advantage of the many free webinars offered by Kilgray, I have been discovering new and exciting features regularly and fallen ever more in love. I mean, for those of you who know it, how could I not? It is so customizable, lovable, wonderful... everything a translator would want from a tool and more! Well, ok, not quite, but they're pretty close and constantly working on getting even closer.

Last night at the monthly get-together of the local chapter of my translator's association BDÜ, the conversation shifted to CAT tools and the various stages of frustration several colleagues are experiencing with theirs, which presented an excellent opportunity for me to share about my new love, I mean, tool. And since I had brought my notebook (I had wanted to introduce Tradeshift, but we never got that far), I ended up giving an impromptu miniature introduction to memoQ. No preparation whatsoever, but apparently my enthusiasm more than made up for it, since one colleague suggested that I should check with Kilgray to become an official salesperson, or at least give seminars, since I was so knowledgeable about this tool?! (Considering that I have only been working with it for 3 months, that's saying something!)

So, over there at Kilgray, how about it? :)

But seriously, I think I would like introducing others to memoQ, and since (as I am finding out) I really enjoy giving seminars, why not? We'll just have to see where this goes... so stay tuned for more on this topic!

Eine Kuh sagt "Moo"...

Eben kam ein kleines Paket aus England bei mir an, das ich schon sehnsüchtig erwartet hatte, Absender: Moo Print Limited. Wem das nichts sagt, der sollte sich mal hier umsehen - es lohnt sich!

Normalerweise drucke ich meine Visitenkarten nach Bedarf selber, mit einer speziellen Software von Sigel und dem dazugehörigen Papier. Sie sehen auch gut aus, man sieht ihnen nicht an, dass sie nicht von einer Druckerei kommen, sondern aus meinem Samsung CLX. Aber sie sind leider nicht so beständig, wie ich zu meinem Bedauern letztes Jahr auf einer Konferenz in Barcelona feststellen musste - als ich meine extra für diesen Anlass in spanischer Version gedruckten Visitenkarten verteilen wollte, hatte sich die Schrift halb gelöst und auf den Rückseiten der nächsten Karten niedergelassen. Vermutlich hatte ich sie nicht lange genug trocknen lassen.

Als ich kürzlich über den Blog einer Kollegin auf Moo kam, war ich sofort begeistert und habe mir jeweils 100 Mini-Visitenkarten für Deutsch, Englisch und Spanisch drucken lassen und gleich noch einen schicken Visitenkartenhalter für den Schlüsselbund dazu bestellt. So habe ich immer eine Karte dabei, mit der ich Eindruck schinden kann! :)

Bleibt nur die Frage, welche ich den nun da hineinstecke, bei der Auswahl...

Ich finde die Idee der Mini-Visitenkarten sehr cool - damit fällt man auf und bleibt potentiellen Kunden länger im Gedächtnis (hoffe ich zumindest...)!

Man kann sich die Vorderseite der Karten selber aussuchen und beliebig variieren, die Abnahmemengen sind meiner Meinung nach auch sehr zuvorkommend (was will ich mit 1000 Visitenkarten, von denen ich später die meisten wegwerfen kann, weil sich etwas geändert hat?), und der Preis ist mehr als in Ordnung.

Was mir außerdem gefällt ist, dass das Ganze umweltfreundlich ist, und die Lieferung war sogar schneller als angegeben!

Für die ersten drei Interessierten hätte ich auch noch einen Gutschein für 15% Rabatt für den ersten Einkauf, also Kommentar hinterlassen und abräumen!

Auf zu neuen alten Ufern

Eigentlich bin ich ja Musikerin. Ich habe angefangen Musik zu machen als ich drei Jahre alt war und habe bis heute nicht damit aufgehört. Dazwischen lag unter anderem auch ein Musikstudium in den USA, und zwar ein Bachelor of Arts in Music (Voice Performance, also Gesang) und ein Masters in Music (Conducting, also Dirigieren), die mir aus verschiedenen Gründen in Deutschland zwar offiziell anerkannt wurden, letztlich aber doch von wenig Nutzen waren, aber das ist eine andere Geschichte. Mein Beruf nun ist Übersetzen und Dolmetschen, und es macht mir nicht nur jede Menge Spaß, es ist auch ein einträgliches Geschäft. Allerdings mit Fachgebieten, die mit meiner Leidenschaft nicht zu tun haben - nämlich Wirtschaft und Technik.

Wenn ich neue Kollegen kennen lerne und ihnen ein bisschen von meinem Lebenslauf erzähle, da ich nun mal mehr oder weniger unverkennbare Quereinsteigerin bin, ist die erste Reaktion immer: "Ah, dein Fachgebiet ist also Musik." Worauf ich immer antworte: "Ähm, nein, überhaupt nicht." Aber in letzter Zeit habe ich mich immer häufiger gefragt: Warum eigentlich nicht?

Ja, warum eigentlich nicht? Durch meine langjährige, zweisprachige musikalische Ausbildung, sowohl praktisch als auch theoretisch, bin ich ja quasi Fachfrau auf dem Gebiet der klassischen Musik, daran kann es also nicht liegen. Nein, die Frage, die sich mir stellte, nachdem ich schließlich Ende letzten Jahres den Entschluss gefasst hatte, mein altes und mein neues Leben zu kombinieren, war folgende: Wie komme ich dort hinein?

Nun zeigte sich einmal mehr, dass es sich wirklich lohnt, sein Netzwerk auszubauen und Kontakte zu knüpfen und zu pflegen. Wie bereits hier erwähnt, war ich Ende Januar auf dem Neujahrsempfang des BDÜ, wo ich u.a. auch Herrn Enninger kennen gelernt habe, wenn auch nur kurz. Er arbeitet beim Kompetenzzentrum Kultur- & Kreativwirtschaft des Bundes (RKW), das unter anderem kostenlose Beratung für künstlerisch tätige Freiberufler u.ä. anbietet. Heute nun hatte ich einen Termin im Regionalbüro in Nürnberg mit Herrn Enninger, und ich muss sagen, das war wirklich eine sehr gut investierte Stunde! Nicht nur war das Gespräch sehr nett und kurzweilig, ich habe nun auch eine nicht kurze Liste mit Namen, sprich Startpunkten, und Strategien, wie in der Musikbranche am besten Kontakte geknüpft und nachverfolgt werden, außerdem einen Buchtipp zum Thema Akquise und Marketing, und - was wahrscheinlich am Wichtigsten ist - Motivation und Bestätigung bekommen, dass ich auf dem richtigen Weg bin!

Nun heißt es also für mich, diese Kontakte herzustellen, meine Webseite entsprechend zu ändern, neue Visitenkarten nur für diese Nische zu entwerfen und eine Menge andere Dinge tun, aber ich bin guten Mutes, dass etwas Gutes dabei herauskommen wird - mag es auch etwas dauern und viel Arbeit benötigen!

Paperless office - well, almost

I just finished a translation for an agency customer who also happens to be a colleague and member of the local BDÜ group. As usual, I proofread my translation before sending it in, and, also as usual, I did so on the screen. And this particular combination of circumstances reminded me of a discussion we had at one of our monthly meetings of said group where we talked among other things about how we do our proofreading, whether for our own translations or for texts written or translated by someone else.
I was amazed to hear that I seemed to be the only one who proofreads exclusively on the screen - everyone else always prints out the texts and goes through them with a pen and marker and then enters the corrections on the computer! And the group was quite mixed concerning both age and experience.
Everyone stared at me disbelievingly, clamoring that surely I would overlook mistakes, that it was just not possible to see everything on the screen and so on and so forth. Until said agency customer / colleague chimed in to say: "But she never overlooks anything. We always check everything that comes in, and I have never found a mistake from her, not even in numbers!"
Besides the fact that it is always very nice to hear such praise from customers - and in front of colleagues to boot! -, it makes me wonder why I seem to be such a rare specimen of the paperless-office kind. Is it just this particular group of translators that needs the tactile experience? Am I the odd one out not wanting to waste resources, both tangible (paper, ink) and intangible (time)?
Mind you, my office is by no means completely paperless. The law requires certain documents to be kept in print for specific periods etc. so there are folders to be found here, too. And since I also do certified translations, I have to print translations out occasionally.
However, there still appear to be way too many people printing out e-mails, attachments, receipts, even web pages, ... you name it, they print it (and then probably don't even file it, but rather stack it, forget about it and then throw it away), something I don't really understand in this digital day and age. With all the handy little tools and devices available, everything is portable and mobile, and with the development of digital signatures, I can see a not-too-far-off future when even certified translations do not need to be printed and signed anymore.

I have a little sentence in my e-mail signature that reads:
Please think about the environment before printing this email.
Perhaps I should change it to:
Please think about your wallet before printing this email.
Money does seem to be the greater incentive, somehow...

I also came across this interesting site: www.saveaswwf.com. You can download a virtual printer there that converts documents into pdf-format that cannot be printed! Just a thought on how to nudge paper-philes into a greener direction...

Interpreting job

So I just finished my first interpreting job over several days for a direct business client. That's two firsts in one go! And it went really well, which makes me very happy! :)

It was the first direct client for me that was not a private person needing some documents translated or someone to interpret at their wedding. How I found this client? Through a colleague who called me before Christmas asking whether I would be available the end of January to interpret a "Train the Trainer Training" held by an English trainer at one of her clients'. She knew me from the BDÜ - goes to show that being involved in associations and groups does make a difference!

It was also the first time for me to interpret not just a few hours but several days in a row. I must admit, I was a bit worried about how my concentration would hold up, but it turned out to be fine. The trainer involved the participants quite a bit, so there were times when they had to do things on their own and I could relax. There were also breaks in between and even lunch! It was still exhausting, especially the last two days, and having to drive there and back every day with the weather turning back to winter (read: snow storm, icy roads, poor visibility, fog etc.) didn't make it any easier. I was totally powered out in the end and treated myself to a nice 1-hour massage... something I will make part of any interpreting assignment lasting more than 2 days from now on!

I got such great positive feedback from both the participants and the trainer - including in front of the bosses during the closing feedback session! - that it was totally worth it though! At times I felt like I was stammering, but I guess an interpreter's worst critic is always her own self, since I was repeatedly commended for delivering very fast, technically accurate and highly professional interpretation services! Several persons also thanked me for helping them understand. Management apparently had at first considered not hiring an interpreter, since "everyone knows English well enough". One person actually said to me: "I am so glad you were there, otherwise I would have been totally lost" - so much for those presupposed English skills...

Of course it also helped that I got to translate the material beforehand (the translation was also lauded, btw), which was a really great way to prepare.

There will be three more sessions with different groups, so it should be easier then. The trainer and I are a good team, and knowing how the other one talks and acts definitely helps!

BDÜ-Neujahrsempfang 2011

Alle Jahre wieder kommt nicht nur das Christuskind, sondern auch der Neujahrsempfang des BDÜ-Landesverbands Bayern. Also habe ich mich wieder aufgemacht - diesmal bei deutlich besseren Wetterverhältnissen als letztes Jahr - und bin mit vier weiteren Nordbayern in München eingetroffen, um diese tolle Gelegenheit zu nutzen, alte Bekannte wieder zu treffen und neue Kolleginnen und Kollegen kennen zu lernen.

Diesmal waren wir in La Villa im Bamberger Haus, wo uns wieder ein hervorragendes Brunch-Buffet und ein nettes Ambiente erwartete. Dieses Jahr gab es zum Essen auch zwei Vorträge:

Zum einen von Herrn Enninger vom Kompetenzzentrum Kultur- & Kreativwirtschaft des Bundes (RKW), der diese relativ neue Einrichtung vorstellte und deren möglichen Nutzen für Übersetzer erläuterte. (Ich habe mich natürlich auch noch persönlich mit ihm unterhalten, wenn auch nur kurz, da ich ja meine Nische "(Klassische) Musik" weiter ausbauen möchte.)

Zum anderen von Herrn Schlosser, ein Richter aus Kempten, der in äußerst kurzweiliger Weise darüber sprach, wie wichtig Dolmetscher in Gerichtsprozessen wirklich sind, und v.a. welche Qualifikationen - sowohl beruflich als auch menschlich - sie mitbringen sollten. Dabei illustrierte er seine Punkte mit Erlebnissen aus seinem Berufsalltag bei Gericht, die einmal mehr deutlich machten, dass die Gerichte tatsächlich gut daran täten, wirklich nur beeidigte und professionelle Dolmetscher hinzu zu ziehen - sonst endet das ganze auch mal in einem Freispruch, nur weil der Dolmetscher unfähig war?!

Die Gespräche mit den Kolleginnen und Kollegen waren wie immer sehr anregend, ich durfte auch wieder neue Gesichter kennen lernen, und natürlich wurden fleißig Visitenkarten ausgetauscht.

Und - wer mich kennt, wird nicht überrascht sein - ich bin auch wieder mit einem neuen Posten aus München zurückgekehrt: Ich bin nun das neueste Mitglied im Redaktionsteam des BayernInfo, der Fachzeitschrift des BDÜ-Landesverbands Bayern. :)

Außerdem habe ich mir Ideen und Ratschläge für die Gruppe für Studierende und Existenzgründer, die ich in Erlangen auf die Beine stellen möchte, eingeholt, und natürlich geredet und gegessen und es genossen, mal wieder unterwegs (als wäre ich das nicht genug?!) und unter Gleichgesinnten zu sein. ;)

Ich freue mich schon so richtig auf dieses Jahr, auch in und mit meinem Verband, und der Neujahrsempfang ist wirklich ein guter Weg, es anzufangen.

Deutsch zum Abgewöhnen: “in keinster Weise”

Die un-Phrase taucht immer wieder auf, wenn es Streit gibt oder etwas dementiert werden muss: Irgendwas war dann “in keinster Weise” beabsichtigt, ist “in keinster Weise” zu tolerieren. Ihr Gebrauch, gern auf Pressekonferenzen, offenbart eine gewisse Verzweiflung und den vermutlich unmittelbar bevorstehenden Verlust der Denk- und Sprachfähigkeit. Als Indiz für unwahre Behauptungen rangiert der Satz bei mir kurz vor dem berüchtigten “Ehrenwort”.
Das Wort “kein” lässt sich nicht steigern. Weniger als nichts gibt es nicht und mehr Nichts hat auch noch niemand mit Erfolg produzieren können. Von “kein” gibt es keinen Komparativ, und wo der fehlt, ist der Superlativ ja erst recht Quatsch. Man kann, wenn es unbedingt sein muss, doch einfach “gar nicht” oder “keinesfalls” sagen. Der Gebrauch dieser Nonsensform sollte in kein…er Weise beibehalten werden. Sonst könnte noch jemand auf die Idee kommen, Dementis hätten etwas mit Demenz zu tun.

Finally! I got all the parts I needed to extend my desk to the right, creating an extra workspace for writing tasks directly in front of the window. Now I have two nicely separated areas and twice the space, so things are a lot more clearly arranged.

It really is just a board and two bookshelves, but hey - makes on happy translator! :)

Morgen ist der letzte Tag des Jahres 2010 - Zeit für den fast schon obligatorischen Rückblick: auf mein erstes Jahr als Blogger, und auf das Jahr überhaupt.

Rein statistisch gesehen habe ich meinen Vorsatz, jede Woche mindestens einen Beitrag zu schreiben, erfüllt: Dies ist Beitrag Nummer 74. Zugegeben, manchmal bestanden diese Beiträge "nur" aus Verlinkungen, Videos oder Beiträgen anderer Schreiber. Trotzdem bin ich schon ein bisschen stolz auf mich, dass ich das tatsächlich durchgezogen habe - selbst im Urlaub gab es Neues, dank der Möglichkeit die Veröffentlichung zu terminieren. Und außerdem: das Web 2.0 ist doch ein Ort, an dem Ideen weiter gegeben werden, somit habe ich doch eigentlich alles richtig gemacht, oder? ;) Schließlich habe ich auch immer brav meine Quellen angegeben.... Und es war ja auch nicht so, als hätte ich selber gar nichts zu sagen gehabt!
Leider war die Rückmeldung meiner Leser (und ich gehe mal davon aus, dass es doch mehrere sind, nachdem mein Blog alleine diesen Monat schon 400 mal angeschaut wurde) eher spärlich - ein Wunsch für nächstes Jahr also: mehr aktive Beteiligung, bitte! So immer ins Leere zu rufen ist schon ein bisschen einsam....

Was 2010 aus geschäftlicher Sicht betrifft, kann ich auch nicht klagen , eher im Gegenteil. Langsam denke ich, dass ich eine gute Balance zwischen Arbeit und Leben gefunden habe, nicht zuletzt auch dank meiner tollen und regelmäßigen Kunden, und inzwischen kann ich sogar schon ohne schlechtes Gewissen "Nein" sagen! :)
Meine Präsenz im Web, mit diesem Blog, Twitter, Webseite, diverse Mitgliedschaften in Online-Communities etc., hat sich schon wiederholt ausgezahlt. Diese Zeit ist also auch definitiv gut investiert!
Kurz gesagt: Für mich war 2010 ein durchweg gutes Jahr!

Und was wünsche ich mir für 2011? Vor allem gute Gesundheit, regelmäßige Arbeit, nette Kunden, viel Abwechslung und Neues, wenig Stress. Und das wünsche ich auch allen Lesern!

So, nachdem ich mich seit Montag erfolglos mit SDL Studio 2009 SP3 herumschlage und jetzt auch nicht mehr zu SP2 zurück kann und auch noch die bisher unangetastete Version auf dem Notebook nicht mehr richtig funktionieren will, ist der Entschluss ein anderes CAT-Tool zu kaufen gefallen.
So begeistert ich von Studio 2009 eigentlich bin, dieses ständige Theater bei jedem Update, ungenügende Patches und Hotfixes, und das ewige Problem mit Java reicht mir jetzt einfach.
Ich habe memoQ schon seit ich es kenne allen empfohlen, die noch kein Tool haben, weil es einfach nur toll ist, und v.a. auch der Support spitze, was ich so mitgekriegt habe. Bis jetzt hatte ich es aber für unsinnig gehalten, mehr als ein Tool zu haben, weil man ja eh immer nur eines benutzt, weil das ständige Wechseln allein schon mit den Termbanken und Translation Memories lästig ist, und meines hat ja (meistens) doch ausreichend funktioniert. Aber jetzt habe ich echt die Nase voll!
Und der nette Gruppenkauf auf ProZ.com hat mich jetzt doch dazu bewogen, diesen Schritt zu gehen.

Der letzte noch lebende Dolmetscher bei den Nürnberger Prozessen

Es ist zwar schon wieder eine Woche her, aber es war so viel los, dass ich erst jetzt zum Berichten komme.

Am 21. November 2010 eröffnete das "Memorium Nürnberger Prozesse" im Landgericht Nürnberg, eine Einrichtung der museen der stadt nürnberg, bestehend aus einer umfassend informierenden Dokumentationsausstellung und dem Schwurgerichtssaal. In eben diesem Saal fand am 30. November eine Lesung mit Siegfried Ramler aus dessen Autobiographie statt.

Geladen hatte unter anderem auch der BDÜ, aber ich wäre auch so gekommen, denn diese einmalige Gelegenheit wollte ich mir nicht entgehen lassen. Also machte ich mich trotz widriger Witterungsverhältnisse auf den Weg nach Nürnberg. Und die Mühe hat sich wirklich gelohnt! Es war fast schon unwirklich jemandem zuzuhören, der an einem solch weltbewegendem Ereignis tatsächlich dabei war! Aktiv beteiligt, und zwar vom ersten bis zum letzten Prozess!

Für meine Generation ist das alles Geschichte, selbst meine Eltern waren noch zu klein, um irgendetwas davon wirklich mitzubekommen, und es scheint einem oft in so weiter Ferne zu sein. Und dann trifft man einen Menschen - spricht mit ihm, gibt ihm die Hand (bekommt ein Autogramm!) - der dabei war, für den das ein Teil seines Lebens ist! Wirklich eine wunderbare Gelegenheit, v.a. als Übersetzer und Dolmetscher!

Herr Ramler hat seine Memoiren auf Englisch verfasst - die Sprache, mit der er die letzten 70 Jahre täglich gelebt hat -, erzählt hat er aber auf deutsch. Und das war meiner Meinung nach nach so langer Zeit erstaunlich gut. Klar fehlten im manchmal die Worte, oder er erwischte das fast-richtige. aber verstanden hat man ihn wunderbar, und auch, dass er eigentlich Österreicher ist, war nicht zu überhören!

Die Fragezeit war leider etwas kurz, aber ich wurde meine Frage beim anschließenden Signieren trotzdem los: Wieso außer ihm sonst keiner bis zum letzten Prozess als Dolmetscher durchgehalten hat? Wie das mit dem psychischen Stress war? Seine Antwort: Er war mit der jüngste Dolmetscher (22), die meisten anderen waren schon älter, im Ruhestand etc.

Er ist mit seinen fast 90 Jahren auf jeden Fall erstaunlich fit und munter, und ich wünsche ihm, dass er noch viele gesunde und produktive Jahre vor sich hat - und endlich auch mal Zeit für sich findet!

Das Buch ist beim Martin Meidenbauer Verlag erschienen.

Nachtrag:

Von meiner Mutter habe ich eben erfahren, dass eine Cousine meiner Großmutter während der Nürnberger Prozesse als Sekretärin gearbeitet hat. Leider ist sie schon vor ein paar Jahren gestorben - wieso erfährt man sowas immer erst, wenn es zu spät ist? Die Generation, die das alles noch gelebt und erlebt hat, geht langsam von uns, und nimmt ihr Wissen leider viel zu oft mit ins Grab...

Should you hire a freelance translator or a translation agency?

Assuming you are not in the translation business, just need such services, either as an individual or for your organization, here are some candid tips to help you in avoiding unpleasant outcomes.
Of course they are not rules that apply always, nor they cover all possibilities. Common sense is advised to prevail, always! You probably don't need a translation agency if:

Your translation is between two fairly common languages worldwide, and you are in a country where either one is the national language. It should be relatively easy to find and contact such a translator directly.

The content of your translation is not specifically directed to practitioners of a profession; any individual with average education will read and understand it.

Only a few copies of your translation will be issued, few people will read it, so the cost of perfectionism in proofreading is not fully justified. 99% right is good enough.

You need a sworn translation in any country that has specific laws about it (e.g. Brazil, Spain, Argentina), and therefore it should be possible to find a list of duly accredited professionals that you can contact directly.

Your translation involves something that requires direct contact with the translator, e.g. guidance on terminology for some new technology where reference material is not widely available.

It's the translation of a foreign book to be commercially published. It's your job to find a suitable translator!

All you need is the translated text, you have all necessary formatting, DTP, web design, whatever post-translation processes covered.

There is no extraordinary rush in terms of too much volume and too little time. One competent translator can handle normally 2,000 to 4,000 words per day, sometimes more.

No special software is involved, e.g. PowerPoint, CAD, video subtitling, DTP-specific programs... though you may find translators that work with the one you need.

You have means to ascertain the final quality of the job, i.e, someone dependable to have a look at it, if you don't master the target language.

You probably need a translation agency if:

Your translation requires relatively hard-to-find language pairs, and/or technical specialization in fields of human knowledge where translators are hard do find.

You need simultaneous translation into several different languages, or have a constant stream of translation work, and don't have time to deal directly with a number of translators.

Your translation will be printed in several thousand copies, or (hopefully) seen by millions of web surfers, and your organization's image will be at stake, so failproof checking is a must.

You need a certified translation for a country where there are no specific laws on that matter, hence there isn't a list of accredited professionals, and it's better to have an established organization to vouch for its accuracy.

You have reference material for the translation content, however you haven't manpower available to answer queries from translators all the time.

You need additional services, either bureaucratic (e.g. notarization, consular legalization) or technical (e.g. video subtitling or dubbing, graphic arts editing, DTP, etc.) and want a turn-key service.

You have a large volume to translate and time is short. You know that more than one translator will be needed, but you don't want the burden of assembling and adjusting all the pieces into something uniform.

You need the translation of material available in proprietary files created with some specific application, e.g. CAD, InDesign, QuarkXpress, PowerPoint, Flash, etc.).

The job is complex, and/or it involves several people/organizations, however you want to process only ONE invoice for it all, with all the work having been thoroughly checked in advance.

As translation is far away from your core business, you just want to send the job with instructions to someone who can do it, and wish that the next news you'll have from them will be the finished job and the invoice; nothing in the meantime.

Tips for hiring a freelance translator:

Do not trust blindly the assertions on their CVs or web sites. An impressive list of clients served may be meaningless. Imagine if all the "work" they did for, say, Microsoft or Disney, was to translate a "No smoking" sign! If available, ask how long they have been working for certain clients, or how many jobs they have done for them.

Don't force translators outside their comfort zone, either in languages or specialties. Just because Spanish and Portuguese are close, a good Brazilian translator working from English might not make an acceptable job from Spanish. A financial translation specialist might not be able to deal well with IT material, and so on.

If you are looking for rock-bottom prices and couldn't care less about quality, consider using free online automatic translation, like http://translate.google.com. Though the flaws will be different, they will be consistent throughout the text, and the overall quality of a cheap amateur translator will be about the same.

Don't look too far away. If you need translation between two European or Pan-American languages, what do you think your chances are in finding a suitable translator in the Far East?

Do care about language variants. If you want a translation for a certain country, be specific! Don't rely on the existence of a 'neutral' variant; there often isn't one.

Don't take loans from translators, they are not in the money-lending business. Strive to pay them as soon as the deliverables have been accepted. If you need cash, borrow it from a bank.

Don't fall for the 'native speaker' talk. If a translator is truly competent, they'll have mastered the target language, regardless of where they have been born. However if your material needs catchy wording, use someone actually living in the target language area (either as a translator or for final editing). A native speaker living for decades outside their homeland may be using outdated language, if some slang or wordplay is involved.

Ascertain whether they'll be doing it themselves or outsourcing. If they will outsource parts of the translation job, make them accountable for consistency; it's their problem. If they will be outsourcing post-translation work (e.g. DTP, dubbing), make them fully responsible for its outcomes - you don't want to have to deal with their vendors. If they'll be outsourcing the whole thing, treat them like an agency (see below), not a freelancer.

Don't ask for miracles. If they tell you it can't be done in the time you are giving them, believe it! Don't insist in forcing them to believe that your farfetched deadline is possible. Better safe than sorry.

Don't believe in translators who tell you they can do anything. Chances are that their work standards are so low for everything, that anyone would be able to improvise with such (despicable) quality.

Tips for hiring a translation agency on the Internet:

Don't get impressed by their web site. Any fly-by-nite business could get a great web designer to make it so. Likewise, a great translation agency may care more about their web site content than bother to dazzle you with flashy animations all over.

Don't get overly impressed by their clients list. A one-page memo translated ten years ago may be the only thing that led any prestigious organization to appear there.

If they offer unbeatable low rates, scram! Look for honest market rates. They might be using free online automatic translation, which you could do as well... at absolutely no cost! Otherwise they might be using such cheap amateurs that it will be a waste of time.

If their web site is multilingual, check all pages in languages you know. This should give you a good sample of the kind of translators and proofreaders they use.

Check their translators recruitment page. If they seem overly interested in rates, it's likely that they are hiring the cheapest vendors in the marketplace.

If it is available on their web site, check their payment terms to translators. There are many traslation agencies that will collect from you COD or even in advance, and yet pay their translators in 30, 60, or more days... with money from the next job they get. These agencies usually don't know (nor care) much about translation; it's just a scheme to get some interim cash at hand.

Also check if they demand that translators deliver fully-proofread material, while asserting that all their work is reviewed by someone else. If they do, you may be paying extra for services you won't get.

Don't look too far away for an agency. Try to hire one in your country, or in the target-language country. Though the cost of living in some places may be lower, most likely they'll have to find competent translators for these languages in either of the two first ones.

Some home-based one-person translation agencies may, in fact, be really good, as long as they don't overgrow their managerial capacity. Unless they pretend to be larger than they actually are, there is no harm.

Last but not least, if it's too good to be true, it probably is. Watch out!

Are you engaging in scary freelance practices? Check out the following list:

Not researching your client. You’d better believe that your client researched you before they hired you. Why wouldn’t you do a little work and research them?
Not asking for a payment up front. For a new client, you should ask for at least 50% of money for the project up front. This ensures that you will get paid at least something.
Starting work before there’s a written agreement in place. Contracts are important, but if you don’t get a contract at least get it in writing. Nobody’s memory is perfect.
Starting work before you understand what the client wants. This one’s easy. Don’t agree to do something unless you understand what the client wants.
Trying to be the lowest priced freelancer in your specialty. Let’s face it, really low prices are scary. It means that you’re going to struggle to make ends meet.
Working for exposure or some other undefined future promises. How valuable is exposure, really? In most cases, a future promise is equivalent to working for free.
Not checking over your work carefully before submitting it to the client. Too many mistakes are bad for business and can lose you a client.
Not managing your time well. Find a time management system that works well for you and stick to it. You can tell if it’s working by whether or not you meet your deadlines.
Not maintaining an online presence. In this environment, an online presence is really not optional. Get online and get involved.
Failing to monitor your reputation. Do you care what your clients are saying about you? If you care about your freelancing business, take the time to find out.
Taking an excessive amount of time to respond to a client. How long do you make a prospective client wait before you answer them? (Hint: Over eight business hours is too long.)
Complaining or griping publicly. How do you conduct yourself online? Do you come across as being pleasant or grumpy? Would you want to work with you?
Not investing in updating your skills. Technology is changing. It’s important for freelancers to stay current in their field by learning all they can.
Working on outdated equipment. The machine you started your freelance business on will be outdated in a year or two. Budget for upgrades.
Failing to keep track of your business expenses during the year. Business expenses are tax deductible (at least in the U.S.). Be sure to keep good records.
Forgetting to take into account the amount of time a project will really take. Don’t try to cram too many projects into too little time.
Not getting help when you need it. Whether it be from another freelancer, or another type of specialist, sometimes the best thing you can do is ask for help.
Playing computer games and surfing when you should be working. Just because you work at home doesn’t mean that you can get away with slacking off.
Not taking enough breaks or scheduling time for vacations. Everyone needs to rest from time to time, and that includes freelancers.
Procrastinating. Avoid the scary habit of putting projects off. If you can, work ahead on your projects so that an emergency doesn’t catch you by surprise.
Panicking. When something goes wrong in your freelancing business, stay calm. Panicking never solved a problem.
Not following up on leads. It’s easy to let leads slip through the crack when you’re busy. Following up on leads could be the difference between feast and famine.
Not negotiating an additional fee for services out of the original scope. Keep an eye on your project’s scope and don’t let it creep too much or the project could wind up costing you money.
Not making time for your family. Your business is important, but you’ll wind it regretting it if you ignore your family and friends.
Missing your deadlines. Deadlines are usually there for a reason. Try to stick to them and at least notify the client if you think you’ll be late.

The Really Scary Stuff

As if the scary list above wasn’t enough, there’s the really bad freelancing practices. These are scary mistakes that I’m sure no Freelance Folder reader would ever make:

Bad mouthing a client (by name) in social media or on your blog. Unless you have evidence that the client is in fact a scammer you’re better off keeping your gripes to yourself.
Plagiarizing someone else’s work. In a perfect world, every freelancer would realize that plagiarism is wrong (and illegal).
Bad mouthing another freelancer (by name) to a client. Oddly enough, putting down your competition to the client winds up making you look bad.
Dropping out of sight in the middle of a project. Nothing says unreliable like breaking off all communication with your client.
Don’t have an emergency fund. You may be able to get by without an emergency fund if you never have an emergency, but why take the chance?

To Sum It All Up

If you’ve been reading Freelance Folder for a while, you probably know most of what I just listed. We’ve written posts on how to succeed and posts on how to fail. However, everybody needs a reminder from time to time (I know that I do). Look over the list above to make sure that you haven’t slipped into any scary bad habits.

Here's an interesting little training video by Ed Gandia from the International Freelancers Academy, fitting this week's topic very nicely. It's called "How to Create a High Impact Elevator Speech - How to craft an elevator statement that sparks conversation" and is part of a free new online training series for freelancers.

Here is a short summary of what Ed talks about:

An elevator speech is a statement that succinctly describes what you do.
Keep it to 15 seconds or less (it's a statement, not a speech, despite its name).
The 3 big elements: What do you do? For whom do you do it? Why are you different?
Simplicity is key! Focus on your core value and your main differentiator.
Relevance: Have different versions for different audiences.
Talk like a human, don't sound like a walking, talking brochure, be conversational.
Remember: It's a conversation starter, like a food sample in the supermarket.

He closes with an assignment on how to go about drafting an elevator speech, which I think is really helpful.

So go ahead, listen and learn and find new customers - maybe even in an elevator! :)

Last weekend I was at the ProZ.com conference in Barcelona, which was not only a great opportunity for me to meet new people and practice my Spanish, but also to learn new things about how to promote my services better and use my time and resources more effectively. One session was all about getting customers to want to hire us (as opposed to other translators/interpreters/etc.), among other things by spiffying up our elevator pitch or elevator speech. The following video is a great help in developing what to say and how to say it, when asked to present our services quickly and concisely.

Die renommierte Literaturübersetzerin Swetlana Geier ist tot. Sie starb am späten Sonntagabend in ihrem Haus in Freiburg, teilte der S. Fischer Verlag mit. Die Schriftstellerin und Übersetzerin wurde 87 Jahre alt.

Die in Kiew geborene Geier galt als eine der bedeutendsten Übersetzerinnen russischer Literatur ins Deutsche. Zuletzt hatte sie ein Werk des russischen Schriftstellers Fjodor Dostojewski (1821-1881) bearbeitet. Geier lebte seit 1944 im Freiburger Vorort Günterstal. Sie lehrte an den Universitäten Freiburg und Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg sowie an der Universität Witten-Herdecke in Nordrhein- Westfalen.

Warum muss immer alles in ein Wort gepackt werden...

Wie wär's denn hiermit:
"Das Gerät ist für alle Software freigeschaltet."

- oder was auch immer "Softwareunlocked / Gejailbreaked" (gefängnisausgebrochen??) bedeuten soll. (Das kommt ja noch erschwerend hinzu!) Das ist zumindest nicht länger und wenigstens verständlich.

Technologiewochenende in München 22.-24.10.2010

Vom 22. bis 24. Oktober fand in München das erste Technologiewochenende zum Thema erneuerbare Energien statt.

Den Anfang machte eine Führung der Photovoltaik-Anlage auf dem Dach der Münchner Messe am Freitagnachmittag. Nachdem sich doch deutlich mehr Teilnehmer angemeldet hatten als erwartet (nämlich insgesamt 107), wurden wir in vier Gruppen aufgeteilt. Aufgrund einiger Verzögerungen wurde diese Einteilung etwas über den Haufen geworfen, was dazu führte, dass die letzte Gruppe, in der ich war, nur aus acht Personen bestand - aber das war ein großer Vorteil, denn im Gegensatz zu den anderen Gruppen gab es keine Probleme mit der Akustik. Dafür mussten wir allerdings auch ziemlich lange warten, bis Georg Wirth von der FH München (Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften, Fakultät für Elektrotechnik und Informationstechnik) uns an Tor 1 abholte.

Nach einer kurzen Einführung in der Eingangshalle (zum Aufwärmen) über die inzwischen 13-Jahre alte Anlage ging es dann zu der Aussichtsplattform auf halber Strecke des 1km-langen Messegeländes. Oben angekommen hatten wir nicht nur einen herrlichen Blick bis zu den Bergen, sondern konnten auch ein Solarmodul aus nächster Nähe betrachten und uns die spezifischen Fakten und Entwicklungen der Anlage erklären lassen.

Herr Wirth beantwortete unsere vielen Fragen sehr geduldig, und zum Abschluss durften wir sogar noch einen Blick auf den Wechselrichter der Anlage im Keller werfen - ein Privileg, das den anderen Gruppen nicht zuteil wurde, hauptsächlich aus zeitlichen und räumlichen Gründen - es war gerade mal Platz für uns neun.

Am Samstagmorgen ging es dann weiter in den Räumen der FH in der Lothstraße. Obwohl auf dem Programm leider die falsche Hausnummer angegeben war, fanden doch schließlich alle das richtige Gebäude und den richtigen Saal, und nach einer kurzen Begrüßung durch Roland Hoffmann machte Prof. Oliver Mayer von GE Global Research den Anfang mit einem hervorragenden Vortrag über Solarthermie und Wasserkraftwerke. Wir erhielten eine sehr detaillierte Einführung in die Solarthermie und die unterschiedlichen Systeme vom Einfamilienhaus bis zur Großanlage, und auch die Wasserkraft wurde mit ihren verschiedenen Methoden beleuchtet.

Leider gab es Probleme mit dem Beamer, so dass einige der Bilder und Filme nicht sehr gut zu sehen waren, weshalb wir in der Kaffeepause in einen anderen Hörsaal umzogen.

Beim nächsten Vortrag von Dipl.-Ing. Florian Horschke von der Evergy Engineering GmbH ging es um Photovoltaik und die verschiedenen Module und Systeme zur Energiegewinnung aus der Sonne und deren Einsatzbereiche.

Nach der nächsten Pause ging es dann weiter mit dem Thema Biomasse und Bioenergie. Dipl.-Ing. Robert Kunde vom ZAE Bayern (Bayerisches Zentrum für Angewandte Energieforschung e.V.) erklärte die Funktionsweise von Holzöfen, die unterschiedlichen Brennmaterialien (Scheite, Hackschnitzel, Pellets), und die Einsatzbereiche zur Wärmeerzeugung. Zum Schluss ging er auch noch auf Biomasseheizkraftwerke und Biogaskraftwerke ein und sprach zum Thema Feinstaub in der Umgebungsluft.

Nach so viel Information hatten wir uns die Mittagspause redlich verdient, und die leckeren Suppen und etwas Frischluft halfen, sich auf die nächsten Vorträge konzentrieren zu können.

Zunächst referierte Dr.-Ing. Simon Schramm, ebenfalls von GE Global Research, über Windenergie, welche ja inzwischen den größten Anteil an erneuerbarer Energie in Deutschland ausmacht. Er gab einen ausführlichen Überblick über die Entwicklung der verschiedenen Bauweisen von Windkraftwerken und ihrer Funktionsweise, sowie die verschiedenen Einsatzgebiete (z.B. Offshore, in Windparks etc.) und die damit verbundenen Vor- und Nachteile.

Der letzte Vortrag des Tages, von vielen als der interessanteste betrachtet, war zum Thema Geothermie. Dr. Erwin Knapek von der Geothermie Unterhaching GmbH & Co KG und ehemaliger Bürgermeister von Unterhaching erzählte sehr ausführlich und unterhaltsam vom langen und teilweise äußerst steinigen Weg der Gemeinde zu ihrer eigenen Fernwärmeproduktion durch Erdwärme.

Alle Referenten nahmen sich viel Zeit die nicht gerade wenigen und teilweise sehr spezifischen Fragen der wissbegierigen Teilnehmer zu beantworten, was dazu führte, dass der Zeitplan sich etwas nach hintern verschob, aber ob der Informationsfülle und der wirklich hervorragenden Vorträge und kompetenten Referenten nahmen wir das gerne in Kauf.

Der Sonntagmorgen begann mit Workshops in Englisch (Geothermie, Windenergie und Photovoltaik und Solarthermie) und Spanisch (Windenergie und Photovoltaik und Solarthermie); Französisch (Wasserkraft, Photovoltaik und Energieverteilung und Biomasse) und Italienisch (Wasserkraft und Photovoltaik) fanden anschließend ebenfalls parallel statt.

Die Referenten hier waren, bis auf zwei Ausnahmen, allesamt auf ihrem Gebiet erfahrene Übersetzerinnen und Übersetzer, und das war auch für uns Teilnehmer von Vorteil, denn die Referenzen, Recherche-Tipps, Links und Glossare, die teils in Papierform, teils später per Link weitergegeben wurden, waren somit allesamt erprobt und für gut oder zumindest hilfreich befunden. Besonders hervorgeheben sei hier die 500-seitige Diplomarbeit über Geothermie EN-DE von Edda Engert, die eigentlich keine terminologischen Fragen zu dem Thema mehr offen ließ.

Rückblickend lässt sich sagen, dass das ganze Wochenende für den ersten Versuch einer solchen Veranstaltung mehr als gelungen war, sowohl was die Organisation (hier sei das Catering besonders hervorgehoben) als auch was die Themen betrifft. Für mich als relativen Neuling war v.a. auch der Kontakt mit den Kolleginnen und Kollegen sehr hilfreich - beim spontan organisierten Essen am Samstagabend durfte ich meine (erfahrenen) Tischgenossinnen ausgiebig ausfragen und so viele gute Tipps für den Berufsalltag mit nach Hause nehmen.

Die Rückmeldungen der Teilnehmer waren insgesamt sehr positiv, und der Wunsch ein solches Wochenende mit anderen Themen (z.B. IT, Stahlproduktion, Elektrotechnik) und weiteren Sprachen, gerne auch an einem anderen Ort, zu wiederholen wurde mehrfach geäußert. Es war doch eine große Anzahl von weiter her gekommen (z.B. aus Sachsen und Baden-Württemberg, und sogar Düsseldorf), und da lohnt sich die Anfahrt für ein Seminar von ein paar Stunden meist nicht.

V.a. die deutschen Fachvorträge wurden gelobt, denn zum einen boten sie eine gute Grundlage fürs Übersetzen, und zum anderen war den meisten Referenten anzumerken, dass sie von ihrem Thema begeistert waren.

Auch die Führung wurde trotz der akustischen Probleme als gut befunden, denn einmal etwas live zu sehen anstatt nur auf dem Bildschirm ist doch immer interessant und hilfreich.

Es gab nur einige wenige Kritikpunkte, u.a. den etwas zu eng gesteckten Zeitplan (zu kurze Pausen) und die als zu wenig interaktiv empfundenen Workshops. Außerdem hätten sich die meisten Teilnehmer mehr Gelegenheit zum besseren Kennenlernen gewünscht, z.B. durch ein gemeinsames Treffen am Anfang und evtl. einer Vorstellungsrunde o.ä., was bei so vielen Teilnehmern aber natürlich nicht ganz so einfach ist wie bei einem kleineren Seminar.

Das Fazit lautet also: Vielen Dank fürs Organisieren und auf ein hoffentlich baldiges Wiedersehen beim nächsten Technikwochenende!

Business dinner

Last night, I went out to dinner with a friend who is also a prospective business partner. Because of the mixture, our conversation went from private to business and back, sometimes even mingling both. I had a great time, and not only because we went to this really great Japanese restaurant, where they offered warm moist towels to clean our hands as we sat down, where they tied linen bibs around our necks to protect our clothing from any stray bits of food (they apparently know me quite well...), where the absolutely delicious food was cooked right in front of us, and the only utensils offered where chopsticks.
No, I also enjoyed it, because it reminds me that business partners are people too. This may sound trite or even silly, but it's true nonetheless. I think we forget too easily that at the other end of the line (e-mail, phone, etc.) is someone who is a person first, with a life and friends and family and worries and hopes and dreams, and then someone I do business with. Even if we have not (yet?) met face to face, I found it is really worth remembering that I am dealing with people, by wishing them a good day or weekend or holiday, by letting them know when I won't be available and why, in short: by treating them courteously and with respect. I want to be treated that way, too, after all. Because then I feel valued as a human being, not just someone who receives a task and returns a result, almost like a machine. And I'm pretty sure, they feel the same way...

Zwar etwas spät gesehen, aber - wie sagte meine Englisch-LK Leiterin immer: "Better läit sen nefer, gell"!

Ich hatte ja im April einen Workshop zum Thema RSS-Feeds gehalten (hier nachzulesen), bei dem zum Schluss die Sprache auch auf Blogs kam und wie ein solcher von der Regionalgruppe sinnvoll genutzt werden könnte. Und es hat auch sofort Früchte getragen, zu sehen hier.

Ich wünsche den neuen Bloggern viel Spaß und hoffe, dass alles so klappt wie gewünscht!

Sure, they want to sell something. Sure, it helps to be nice in order to do so. But still!

I had to download the trial version of a flowchart editing program for one of my agency clients so I could translate a document they sent me. Since I was busy with a rather large proofreading job, I merely downloaded it from the software company's website and installed it. I took a quick look at it to see whether it worked (it did, even though I would have to replace every word by hand) and that was it.
Not 24 hours later, I received a call from one of the representatives of the company (I had had to give some contact information in order to download the program), asking me what I needed the program for, if I knew how to use it and whether I needed any help. When I said that I needed it to translate the text in some flowcharts, he proceeded to show me some tricks for how to make that go faster. He even shared the view of his desktop so I could see what he was doing. When he didn't have an immediate answer to a question (namely whether it was possible to re-import the xml or html list of text to be translated which can be exported and translated in a CAT tool), he promised to look into it and call me back before the next day was over. 20 minutes of nothing but "How can I help you make your work easier?" - how is that for customer service?!

So, although I most likely will not purchase their product (the cheapest version costs over € 400), I can certainly recommend their customer service!

The 10 stages of communication

Being a freelance translator working from home, it's important not to lose contact with the real world. This is true not only regarding your personal life, but also when it comes to communicating with clients and colleagues. So much is done virtually, via e-mail, Skype and social media such as Facebook or Twitter, it is easy to forget that there are real people involved on both ends. And it is a real treat meeting people "in real life" after having only had virtual contact, as I got to experience not so long ago.

The graphic below shows the different stages of communication, starting with face-to-face talking and ending with the kind of universal Twitter.

It probably won't hurt to check how much of our daily communication takes place at what level, and to maybe adjust things a bit to get more into the more personal area between 10 and 7 (when was the last time you wrote an actual letter to someone that wasn't a company or included a check?).

Photoausstellung "Dolmetscher und Übersetzer beim Nürnberger Prozess" in Hof

Gestern war die Eröffnung der Photoausstellung "Dolmetscher und Übersetzer beim Nürnberger Prozess" im Landgericht Hof. Als Co-Leiterin der Schwester-Regionalgruppe bin ich auch hin gefahren, als Unterstützung und weil es wirklich interessant ist - obwohl ich die Ausstellung schon in Erlangen gesehen hatte.
Ich hatte mich schon während meiner Ausbildung am IFA in Erlangen mit dem Thema "Dolmetscher und Übersetzer beim Nürnberger Prozess" beschäftigt - eine wirklich faszinierende Sache. Dieser Prozess war die Wiege des Simultandolmetschens, denn bis dato war diese Art der Verdolmetschung gänzlich unbekannt. Aber die Problematik, dass vier Sprachen beteiligt waren und es nicht Jahre dauern sollte, machten eine Revolution erforderlich. Dank der Entwicklung einer entsprechenden Anlage durch IBM und der unglaublichen Anstrengung unzähliger Dolmetscher und Übersetzer, konnte der Prozess tatsächlich in relativ kurzer Zeit abgewickelt werden.
Natürlich gab es Probleme, sowohl technischer als auch persönlicher Art: Viele Dolmetscher waren ja unmittelbar von den Ereignissen betroffen und mussten ausgetauscht werden, weil sie die psychische Belastung - z.B. über ein KZ dolmetschen zu müssen, in dem sie ihre gesamte Familie verloren hatten - nicht aushielten. Andere, v.a. Göring, machten sich die Komplexität und die Schwächen des Systems schamlos zunutze, sowohl was die technische, als auch was die menschliche Seite betraf.
Nach der Begrüßung durch den Präsidenten des Landgerichts Hof, Wolfgnag Hoemke, und einiger einstimmender Worte zur Situation von Gerichtsdolmetschern und -übersetzern heute von Norma Keßler, der BDÜ-Vizepräsidentin, hielt Dr. Theodoros Radisoglou, dem es zu verdanken ist, dass die Photographien von Ray D'Addario zu dieser Ausstellung zusammen kamen, die u.a. schon in Erlangen und Coburg zu sehen waren, einen wundervoll unterhaltsamen und kurzweiligen kleinen Vortrag, der auf die Bilder einstimmte. Prof. h.c. Dr. Klaus Kastner, ehemaliger Präsident des Landgerichts Nürnberg-Fürth, der bereits mehrere Aufsätze und Bücher über die Nürnberger Prozesse geschrieben hat, gab ebenfalls ein paar interessante Einblicke in die Problematik und die überaus spannende Situation, mit der alle Beteiligten damals konfrontiert waren.
Damit war die Ausstellung offiziell eröffnet, und wir konnten, mit Getränken und leckeren Häppchen bewaffnet, unsere Aufmerksamkeit den hervorragenden und eindrücklichen Photographien widmen. Obwohl ich sie nicht zum ersten Mal sah, waren sie für mich doch immer noch oder wieder faszinierend. Ich kann mir gar nicht vorstellen, wie die Arbeitsbedingungen damals gewesen sein mussten. Allein schon die Unmengen an Dokumenten, die innerhalb kürzester Zeit übersetzt sein mussten - kein Wunder, dass da auch mal Fehler vor kamen. Und dann der ständige Hintergrundlärm während des Dolmetschens - die "Kabinen" waren ja nach oben offen. Die heutigen schalldichten und bequemen Nachfolger sind da im Vergleich Luxus pur! Und dann noch der psychische Stress, überhaupt an diesem Prozess beteiligt zu sein, maßgeblich, und trotzdem unsichtbar, und wohl nie neutral oder ganz und gar subjektiv. Ich kann vor der Leistung dieser Pioniere nur meinen Hut ziehen!

The top 5 things to consider before translating content

Is the document finalized? Will there be any future edits? Making changes to the original language after translation has begun is likely to incur additional fees, even for small changes. If you’re having the text laid out in a formatted document, you’re likely to incur additional charges for re-formatting the document as well. Sending a translation before it’s been edited won’t save you much time, and it will definitely cost you money. That being said, a quality translation agency will often try to provide these changes for free when possible, but if the translators are going to charge the agency, the agency will probably end up charging you.
Who is the target audience? Who is the document being written for? How will it be used? It is advisable to do your best to make the level of the original content match up with your intended audience, instead of relying on a translator to do it for you. The agency or translator can always benefit from knowing if the content is intended for dock workers, a board of directors, or somewhere in the middle. If you produce an English document that is legal-terminology heavy, and ask a translator to make it readable for 8^th graders… you’re basically asking them to do two completely different tasks, and you may not approve of their efforts to simplify the English. If the document is of utmost importance for court proceedings, tax filings, or other documents of record, rushing translations and skipping the proofreading to contain costs is not recommended.
Do you plan to have the translation checked by internal reviewers? If so, do you have internal reviewers already set up to check the translations? Who are they? What are their qualifications? Are they linguists, subject matter experts, etc.? If you don’t already have reviewers set up, know that this can be time consuming and may delay the completion of the project. If you’re trying to set them up in a rush, you may be less likely to identify the best possible reviewers. Picking internal reviewers on the basis of: having time, being accessible, or willingness are not likely to produce valuable reviews. Pick reviewers who have good language skills, have worked at the company for some time, and who are experts in the subject matter. Don’t have a junior HR representative review engineering translations, for example.
What is your timeline? Is your timeline realistic? As is the case with all project management, the “Triple Constraint” applies. You can have a project completed at a high level of quality, at a high rate of speed, and at a low cost… but adjusting one of these will surely impact one or both of the remaining factors. Rushing translation will almost always incur extra fees, for example. Also make sure to roll in time to your project timeline for internal reviews. Most reviewers have other responsibilities, and often need more time to look over the finished project than the translation itself took. Make sure this is part of your project plan, and make sure you alert project stakeholders to this vital part of the process, and why it may take longer than they expect.
What will the end product be? An online .PDF? A poster? A handbook? A letter from the CEO to the whole company? Any additional information you give to your agency is helpful. If you’re translating from English into German, and the end product is a poster, it’s best to let your agency/translator know, as the German language tends to “grow” the original English verbiage by 20-25%; if they’re aware, the translator can work to find shorter translations to make sure that all your content will fit on one page. This is not new, but still good:

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as 'Euro-English'.

In the first year, 's' will replace the soft 'c'. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard 'c' will be dropped in favour of 'k'. This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome 'ph' will be replaced with 'f'. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Ich habe ja ein paar wirklich tolle Kunden, und mit die besten sind ein junges Team aus Zürich, das nun schon seit 5 Jahren als "Supertext" die Welt der Sprache jeden Tag ein bisschen besser macht.
Nachdem wir nun schon fast 2 Jahre per Telefon, Skype und E-Mail miteinander kommuniziert haben, wollte ich die Gelegenheit nicht ungenutzt lassen, sie auch mal zu besuchen, als ich letztes Wochenende in Zürich war. Und wie die Supertextler nun einmal sind, haben sie mich (und meinen Mann, der mit von der Partie war) gleich zum Mittagessen eingeladen - Vielen Dank nochmal dafür, es war super-lecker!!
Es war wirklich schön, sich mal von Angesicht zu Angesicht zu sehen und ein bisschen persönlicher kenne zu lernen. In der heutigen Zeit der Globalisierung und virtuellen Beziehungen aller Arten ist das ja schon fast eine Seltenheit geworden, und das ist eigentlich keine gute Entwicklung, denn es geht nichts über den persönlichen Kontakt, sei es privat oder geschäftlich.
Ich zumindest habe jetzt eine noch bessere Vorstellung davon, wie es bei Supertext so zugeht, wie die Leute dort sind (nämlich super-nett), und ich fühle mich nicht wie nur ein weiteres Rädchen im Getriebe der anonymen Übersetzungsmaschine, sondern wie ein gleichwertiger Kollege - auf Augenhöhe, sozusagen, auch wenn das in diesem Fall nicht so ganz hinhaut... :)

Mr. Clemens was introduced by the president of the club, who, quoting from the Mark Twain autobiography, recalled the day when the distinguished writer came to New York with $3 in small change in his pockets and a $10 bill sewed in his clothes.
It seems to me that I was around here in the neighborhood of the Public Library about fifty or sixty years ago. I don't deny the circumstance, although I don't see how you got it out of my autobiography, which was not to be printed until I am dead, unless I'm dead now. I had that $3 in change, and I remember well the $10 which was sewed in my coat. I have prospered since. Now I have plenty of money and a disposition to squander it, but I can't. One of those trust companies is taking care of it.
Now, as this is probably the last time that I shall be out after nightfall this winter, I must say that I have come here with a mission, and I would make my errand of value.
Many compliments have been paid to Mr. Carnegie to-night. I was expecting them. They are very gratifying to me.
I have been a guest of honor myself, and I know what Mr. Carnegie is experiencing now. It is embarrassing to get compliments and compliments and only compliments, particularly when he knows as well as the rest of us that on the other side of him there are all sorts of things worthy of our condemnation.
Just look at Mr. Carnegie's face. It is fairly scintillating with fictitious innocence. You would think, looking at him, that he had never committed a crime in his life. But no--look at his pestiferious simplified spelling. You can't any of you imagine what a crime that has
been. Torquemada was nothing to Mr. Carnegie. That old fellow shed some blood in the Inquisition, but Mr. Carnegie has brought destruction to the entire race. I know he didn't mean it to be a crime, but it was, just the same. He's got us all so we can't spell anything.
The trouble with him is that he attacked orthography at the wrong end. He meant well, but he, attacked the symptoms and not the cause of the disease. He ought to have gone to work on the alphabet. There's not a vowel in it with a definite value, and not a consonant that you can hitch anything to. Look at the "h's" distributed all around. There's"gherkin." What are you going to do with the "h" in that? What the devil's the use of "h" in gherkin, I'd like to know. It's one thing I admire the English for: they just don't mind anything about them at all.
But look at the "pneumatics" and the "pneumonias" and the rest of them. A real reform would settle them once and for all, and wind up by giving us an alphabet that we wouldn't have to spell with at all, instead of this present silly alphabet, which I fancy was invented by a drunken thief. Why, there isn't a man who doesn't have to throw out about fifteen hundred words a day when he writes his letters because he can't spell them! It's like trying to do a St. Vitus's dance with wooden legs.
Now I'll bet there isn't a man here who can spell "pterodactyl," not even the prisoner at the bar. I'd like to hear him try once--but not in public, for it's too near Sunday, when all extravagant histrionic entertainments are barred. I'd like to hear him try in private, and when he got through trying to spell "pterodactyl" you wouldn't know whether it was a fish or a beast or a bird, and whether it flew on its legs or walked with its wings. The hances are that he would give it tusks and make it lay eggs.
Let's get Mr. Carnegie to reform the alphabet, and we'll pray for him --if he'll take the risk. If we had adequate, competent vowels, with a system of accents, giving to each vowel its own soul and value, so every shade of that vowel would be shown in its accent, there is not a word in any tongue that we could not spell accurately. That would be competent, adequate, simplified spelling, in contrast to the clipping, the hair punching, the carbuncles, and the cancers which go by the name of simplified spelling. If I ask you what b-o-w spells you can't tell me unless you know which b-o-w I mean, and it is the same with r-o-w, b-o-r-e, and the whole family of words which were born out of lawful
wedlock and don't know their own origin.
Now, if we had an alphabet that was adequate and competent, instead of inadequate and incompetent, things would be different. Spelling reform has only made it bald-headed and unsightly. There is the whole tribe of them, "row" and "read" and "lead"--a whole family who don't know who they are. I ask you to pronounce s-o-w, and you ask me what kind of a one.
If we had a sane, determinate alphabet, instead of a hospital of comminuted eunuchs, you would know whether one referred to the act of a man casting the seed over the ploughed land or whether one wished to recall the lady hog and the future ham.
It's a rotten alphabet. I appoint Mr. Carnegie to get after it, and leave simplified spelling alone.
Simplified spelling brought about sun-spots, the San Francisco earthquake, and the recent business depression, which we would never have had if spelling had been left all alone.
Now, I hope I have soothed Mr. Carnegie and made him more comfortable than he would have been had he received only compliment after compliment, and I wish to say to him that simplified spelling is all right, but, like chastity, you can carry it too far.

Invoicing, discounts etc. for certified translations

Dear fellow sworn translators and interpreters.
Most of you have probably been in this situation before: a customer, a private person, wants to get married to someone from another country, so they need a ton of documents translated and certified for the civil registry. If one of the two has been married before, add to the usual birth certificate, visas or what have you the divorce decree, which can be pretty lengthy. Since the documents are supposed to look like the originals as much as possible, there is usually also a fair amount of formatting involved, which should be invoiced, too. All this together can add up pretty quickly to a fairly large sum, to which is then also added sales tax, and the customer is often surprised, to say the least.
If you, like I am, are also a sworn interpreter, you know you'll most likely also be the one interpreting at the registration for marriage and at the wedding.
So here is my dilemma: I know what my work is worth and I am not going to sell myself cheap (no peanuts for me, thank you)! However, I still feel terrible having to invoice large amounts, especially when I know that the customer is not on the wealthy side and already has a lot of expenses as is. I know, too, that this is not my problem and that the customer should just have to bite the bullet, if he/she really wants to get married (kind of like a last check to see if it is all worth it?), and pay for the service(s) rendered. But I still feel bad about it, although I know I am not overcharging or taking advantage of the customer.
So here are my questions to you:
Do you give discounts if you are also asked to interpret? If so, how much?
Do you give discounts for xyz? I'd like to know for what and how much.
How do you deal with this bad feeling, even though you know what you charge is a fair price?

Samsung CLX-2160 und Windows 7

Mein neues Notebook läuft mit Windows 7, was ich Welten besser finde als Vista (das ich mir sowieso nie kaufen wollte). XP wurde netterweise auch mitgeliefert, so dass ich, falls meine diversen Übersetzungsprogramme nicht auf Windows 7 laufen sollten, ich darauf zurück gehen könnte. Erstaunlicherweise war das aber gar nicht nötig, denn alles funktioniert wunderbar. Bis auf den Drucker. Der ist nicht uralt, sondern gerade mal 1 1/2 Jahre, und sollte eigentlich keine Spierenzchen machen. Hat er aber trotzdem. Auch nachdem ich von der Samsung-Webseite den Universal-Treiber herunter geladen und installiert hatte, der auch für Windows 7 gehen sollte. Tut er aber nicht. Grummel. Es kann ja nicht sein, dass ich immer alles per Stick o.ä. auf meinen PC transferiere, nur um es zu drucken?! Also weiter nach einer Lösung gesucht...
Und nun habe ich endlich eine gefunden - das Internet macht's möglich!

Und so geht es:
1. Alle Treiber, Programme (Smart Panel etc.) entfernen, deinstallieren, löschen... auf jeden Fall weg damit!
2. System neu starten.
3. Diesen Treiber herunter laden (leider nicht auf Deutsch zu haben).
4. Installieren und den Anweisungen folgen, also Drucker verbinden und anschalten, dann geht es von alleine.
5. DRUCKEN!!!

Ich hoffe, ich konnte hiermit auch anderen helfen, die das gleiche Problem haben! :)

Darüber gebloggt habe ich ja schon hier, jetzt habe ich den Film auch gesehen. Und er ist wirklich fantastisch!
Einerseits erzählt er die fast unglaubliche Lebensgeschichte von Swetlana Geier, die mit 90 Jahren immer noch alleine in ihrem mehrstöckigen Häuschen wohnt und arbeitet wie eh und je, die den Tod ihres Sohnes verkraften muss und seit 65 Jahren das erste Mal wieder in ihre Heimat zurückkehrt.
Andererseits erzählt der Bild-gewaltige Film von ihrer fast greifbaren und ansteckenden Liebe zur Sprache und von ihrer - für mich als "moderne Übersetzerin" kaum machbar anmutenden - Übersetzungsmethode, die eine Schreiberin (an einer mechanischen Schreibmaschine!) und einen (Vor-)Leser beinhaltet.
Wirklich ein sehenswerter Film, nicht nur für Übersetzer und Liebhaber von Sprache und Literatur!
In Nürnberg läuft er noch bis nächste Woche im Filmhauskino.

4-Augen-Prinzip: Fluch oder Segen

Gestern Abend beim monatlichen Stammtisch meiner BDÜ-Regionalgruppe ging es um dieses Thema (nochmal Danke für den Vorschlag, Johanna!). Die Diskussion war erstaunlich lebhaft (v.a. wenn man die Temperaturen bedenkt) und führte auch in mehrere andere Richtungen, z.B. wie Übersetzer Korrekturlesen, ob nun eigene Übersetzungen oder fremde, oder wie Papier-frei ein Übersetzungsbüro sein darf oder sollte u.ä.
Die Meinungen gingen bei fast allen Themen relativ weit auseinander, allerdings hat es mich (als Leiterin) sehr gefreut, dass die Diskussionen trotzdem freundlich und sachlich blieben.
Zusammenfassend haben wir uns dann darauf geeinigt, dass es immer darauf ankommt, ob man nach dem 4-Augen-Prinzip arbeitet, nämlich:
- ob man die Zeit dazu hat,
- ob man dafür (vernünftig) bezahlt wird, und
- was für eine Art von Text es ist bzw. für wen er ist.
Das Gleiche gilt auch fürs Korrekturlesen per Ausdruck (also Papier) vs. Korrekturlesen am Bildschirm (also Papier-frei), und für noch viele andere Themen auch. Und natürlich hat es auch viel mit der Persönlichkeit, Selbstdisziplin, Organisationsfähigkeit etc. jedes Einzelnen zu tun.
Letztendlich ist das aber Wichtigste, dass man selbst und der Kunde mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden ist, sowohl was die Qualität des Endergebnisses betrifft, als auch bezüglich der Vergütung.

Nach dem Urlaub

Nachdem ich ja letzte Woche in Nordspanien die herrlich angenehmen Temperaturen um die 25°C genießen durfte und dann in diese unglaubliche Hitze zurück kam, hatte ich eigentlich darauf gehofft, dass der Wiedereinstieg in den Arbeitsalltag schön langsam passiert. Dieser Traum hat sich nicht erfüllt, denn ich habe schon wieder volle Auftragsbücher, d.h. ich muss mich im Büro mit Deckenventilator und herunter gelassener Jalousie verbarrikadieren, anstatt mit einem eisgekühlten Getränk und "La sombra del viente" von Carlos Ruiz Zafón (natürlich im Original) auf der Terrasse zu sitzen.
Na ja, dafür kann ich mir dann schneller wieder einen Urlaub leisten...

Warum muss immer alles in ein Wort gepackt werden...

Wie wär's denn hiermit:"Das Gerät ist für alle Software freigeschaltet."

- oder was auch immer "Softwareunlocked / Gejailbreaked" (gefängnisausgebrochen??) bedeuten soll. (Das kommt ja noch erschwerend hinzu!) Das ist zumindest nicht länger und wenigstens verständlich.
